Janie and Tea Cake Siting in a Tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G! (G) by Andrea Burman

Another relationship is starting for Janie, this time with a much younger man. Let's gather as many quotes as we can to characterize this growing relationship, including the drastic decision Janie makes in chapter 13 - a decision that most of the people in town find shocking! Put down at least THREE quotes from chapters 10-14, and underneath them all, explain how they characterize Janie in this new stage of her life. NOTE: YOU CAN DO MORE THAN THREE FOR A LITTLE EXTRA CREDIT. IF I SEE YOU ON A QUOTE SITE OR STUDY SITE, YOU GET NO CREDIT. You can work with ONE partner or on your own.

Quote: "He was jumping her king! She screamed in protest against losing this king she had such a hard time acquiring. Before she had knew it she had grabbed his to stop him. He struggled gallantly to free himself. That is he struggle, but not hard enough to wrench a ladys finger." (Hurston 96)

Analysis: This quote shows how desperate Janie is to find a new man and to find the new perfect man. She wants to find the perfect man so she does not have to go through what happened last time when she found a man. I feel like she is really looking for her king so she can settle down an start the perfect family in her town and in her home with her new perfect man.

Quote: "So the very next morning Janie got ready to pick beans along with Tea Cake" (Hurston 133).

Analysis: This quote shows the antithesis of her relationship with Tea Cake to her relationship with Joe. When Joe told her to work, she was unhappy and hated it. The store even ended up being a very negative part of Janie's life after Joe died. Janie, however, chose to work with Tea Cake by her own will instead of letting herself be forced into it just to please her spouse. This shows how Janie had found a relationship where she was happy again and would be willing to help Tea Cake in whatever way she can.

Quote: " Janie's train left too early in the day for the town to witness much, but the few who saw her leave bore plenty witness. They had to give it to her, she sho looked good, but she had no business to do it. It was hard to love a woman that always made you feel so wishful." ( Hurston 116)

Analysis:This quote illustrates the complete trust Janie had for Tea Cake. She did not feel hesitation when she decided to leave on a train for Jacksonville because she trusted that Tea Cake would be there for her and would not abandon her. The town saw her leave and some men felt jealous of such a beautiful woman leaving but were unable to try to get her to stay. Especially since the town did not know Joe's treatment of Janie, they could only watch as she left.
Quote: "Janie awoke next morning by feeling Tea Cake almost kissing her breath away" (107)
Analysis: This quote shows her love and her careness toward her new boy friends. This quote shows what she will do for this new man not to loose him and not to relive the past.
Quote: "He sat down on the floor beside her and kissed and playfully turned up the corner of her mouth" (121)
Analysis: This quote shows that the man also cares about her and that they care for each other very equally and hat that they both love each other very much. This relationship shows that they are perfect for each other.

quote: "All next day in the house and store she thought resisting thoughts about Tea Cake. She even ridiculed him in her mind and was a little ashamed of the association. But every hour or two the battle had to be fought all over again. She couldn't make him look just like any other man to her. He looked like the love thoughts of women." (Hurston 106)
analysis: Tea Cake treats Janie like his queen and shows her how a real man should treat her. From this love, Janie cant stop thinking about him. When she thinks about any other man, she sees them differently than Tea Cake.

quote: "And there was Tea Cake in the big old station in a new blue suit and straw hat, hauling her off to a preacher's house first thing. Then right on to the room he had been sleeping in for two weeks all by himself waiting for her to come. And such another hugging and kissing and carrying on you never saw. It made her so glad she was scared of herself." (Hurston 117)
analysis: He takes time to make sure that he cares for Janie. She never had this type of love from one of her previous lovers, and Tea Cake is a refreshing change. He showers her with love and affection by hugging and kissing her, which she never got from Joe. This new chapter of Janie's life shows her that she has always deserved this type of love.

quote: "He drifted off into sleep and Janie looked down on him and felt self crushing love. So her soul crawled out from its hiding place." (Hurston 128)
analysis: After Janie's abusive relationship with Joe, she had a hard time understanding how to accept love back in her life. With Tea Cake, she feels a sense of comfort and trust that she never had with Joe. In her new relationship, she is allowing Tea Cake to enter her life and make her happy.

quote: "Ah met plenty women before Ah knowed you tuh talk tuh. You’se de onliest woman in de world Ah ever even mentioned gittin married tuh. You bein’ older don’t make no difference." (Hurston 121)
analysis: Tea Cake is expressing his true feelings for Janie. Just because Janie is significantly older than him, he is not bothered because she is perfect for him. If you love someone, it doesn't matter how old they are because love is the ultimate key to living a happy and healthy life.

Quote 1: "De way you looked at me when Ah said whut Ah did. Yo’ face skeered me so bad till mah whiskers drawed up." (Ch.11, Pg. 104)

Analysis 1: Tea Cake is open and honest about his admiration for Janie. She loves this as Joe never really showed much love unless it was fake. She loves the truthfulness she receives from him.

Quote 2:"Things lak dat [age] got uh whole lot tuh do wid convenience, but it ain’t got nothin’ tuh do wid love." (Ch.11, Pg. 105)

Analysis 2: Janie may think the age difference is a little off but Tea Cake sees no problem with it. He is open and honest about this. This correlates with quote one and how Janie loves his honesty with her.

Quote 3: "Ah met plenty women before Ah knowed you tuh talk tuh. You’se de onliest woman in de world Ah ever even mentioned gittin married tuh. You bein’ older don’t make no difference." (Ch. 13, Pg. 121)

Analysis 3: Tea Cake is confessing his love for Janie and admitting that she is special to him. He wants to reassure her that the age difference does not matter to him and it should not to he either.

Quote 4: "He drifted off into sleep and Janie looked down on him and felt a self-crushing love. So her soul crawled out from its hiding place." (Ch.13, Pg. 128)

Analysis 4: Janie feels a calming love and adores Tea Cake. This love stems from a nurturing instinct Janie has when it comes to him.

Quote 5: "Ah’ll have tuh tell yuh de real truth, so yuh can know. Janie, Ah gits lonesome out dere all day ‘thout yuh. After dis, you betta come git uh job uh work out dere lak de rest uh de women, so Ah won’t be losin’ time comin’ home." (Ch.14, Pg. 133)

Analysis 5: This quote shows the real love and attachment Tea Cake has to Janie. He is asking her to come with him and pick beans with him so he is not lonely and does not waste time away from her.

Quote (1): "Then again he didn't look like he had too much. Maybe he was hanging around to get in with her and strip her of everything she had." (Hurston 100)
- Analysis: This quote mentions Janie's new possible lover and the risk that comes with running away with someone that she barely knows.
Quote (2): "Tea-Cake! So you sweet as all dat?' She laughed and he gave her a little cut-eye look to get her meaning." (Hurston 97)
- Analysis: This quote alludes to Janie's interest in a fresh start with a new man who she can truly love. At this point, she is desperate to be happy again.
Quote (3): "But, Janie, Tea Cake, whilst he ain't no jail-bird, he ain't got uh dime tuh cry. Ain't you skeered he's jes after yo' money-- him bein' younger than you?"
- Analysis: Here Janie begins to realize that diving into a new relationship may be a mistake at this point in her life. Perhaps she should be patient and wait for when the time to love again is right.

quote: Quote 1: "He looked like the love thoughts of women. He could be a bee to a blossom--a pear tree blossom in the spring. He seemed to be crushing scent out of the world with his footsteps. Crushing aromatic herbs with every step he took. Spices hung about him. He was a glance from God." (Hurton 106)
analysis: This quote says a lot about Janie and Tea Cake's new relationship. She uses romantic language to talk about him, which shows how much she likes and admires him. Janie sees Tea Cake as someone who brings life and excitement into her life. The images of him as a bee on a flower and crushing a scent out of the world show how she feels about him.
quote: "Tea cake stuck out till he had some brekfast, than he talked and acted out the story." (Hurtson 122)
analysis:This quote shows how Janie really enjoys being with tea cake, and wants to keep him around.

quote: "Every day they were practising. Tea Cake made her shoot at little
things just to give her good aim. Pistol and shot gun and rifle. It got so
the others stood around and watched them. Some of the men would
beg for a shot at the target themselves. It was the most exciting thing
on the muck. Better than the jook and the pool-room unless some special band was playing for a dance" (Hurston 131)
analysis: Further shows how Janie loves to spend time with tea cake, and likes doing normal things with her, as tea cake respects Janie.

Quote: "Janie awoke next morning by feeling Tea cake almost kissing her breath away. Holding her and caressing her as if he feared she might escape his grasp and fly away.." (122 Hurston)
Analysis: This line shows her love for this new man named tea cake and how she is feeling towards him. She wants him to just kiss him and grab her and she wants all of these to happen. This shows a new love life and acts as a new Chapter.
Quote: "As soon as thought it looked right she slipped out of the back and joined Tea Cake. No need of fooling herself. Maybe he was just being polite. Tea Cake, your sure you want me to tuh go tuh dis picnic wid yuh?"
Analysis: This shows how she wants to just spend a lot of time with Tea Cake by forcing herself into conversations with him and wanting to go to the picnic with him. This shows her wanting to chase after a man which she has never done before and she wants to actually spend time with him unlike Joe.

Quote: "And there was Tea Cake at the big old station in a new blue suit and straw hat, hauling her off to a preachers house first thing. (Hurston 117)
Analysis: Janie has been married to Joe who was not super good to her and this new love that she is receiving is radically different with hugging kissing which is new to her symbolizing a new chapter in her life.

So, she would not want this to be the same way.

Quote: "Janie wanted to ask Hezekiah about tea cake, but she was afraid he might misunderstand her and think she was interested."
Analysis: In this moment, her doubt really came back to her and she was thinking about the past and how she did not want a repeat of it.

Quote: "Tea cake don't talk that way.
