On the first day of class I talk about how diverse the college is, and how that diversity enriches us by offering many different points of view. And as we may be talking about many topics that are personal and sensitive, I invite you to tell us what you need from us to make this a space where we can do this learning and sharing effectively. As the students respond, I write the words on the board. Typically they are things like respect, openess, nonjudgmental, etc. As I am writing them down, I expand on them, or ask the student to say more about what they mean. When we're done, I ask if everyone understands what we've said, and agrees that this is how we will behave while we are in class. I post the list in the Announcements in Blackboard, and remind students that we are all accountable, and that we can let one another know if the agreements have been violated (me included).
