And as we may be talking about many topics that are personal and sensitive, I invite you to tell us what you need from us to make this a space where we can do this learning and sharing effectively. As the students respond, I write the words on the board. Typically they are things like respect, openess, nonjudgmental, etc. As I am writing them down, I expand on them, or ask the student to say more about what they mean. When we're done, I ask if everyone understands what we've said, and agrees that this is how we will behave while we are in class.
