2. How does Euripides provoke sympathy for Medea?

Euripides emphasises on all Medea has done in the past to be with Jason.
- Murdered her brother to be with Jason
- She murdered King Pelias because he took the throne from Jason
- She moved to corinth with jason and their children

It provokes sympathy because it demonstrates to us how Medea dedicated her entire relationship with Jason to him and how she escaped her family for him, even murdered her brother. How she got revenge on Jason’s uncle for him and how she continued to run away with him even though he was no longer King also. She stayed loyal and faithful to Jason but once Jason laid eyes on Princess Glauce, all that Medea had did was no longer significant and it was all forgotten.

1. Medea is a study of injustice, betrayal and revenge. Do you agree?(Agree)

Injustice:

- The 2 sons had to die for Medea’s revenge on Jason’s wrongs
- Medea was abandoned by Jason

- The princess suffered because of Jason’s un-loyalty to his wife Medea.

Betrayal:
- Jason betrayed Medea for Princess Glauce
- Medea betrayed her sons for revenge on Jason
- Medea’s nurse appears to be loyal, however she did not aware Medea about her banishment.

Revenge:
- Medea murdered King Pelias because he took the throne before Jason had returned
- Medea retaliated against Jason by murdering the Princess and the King
- Medea murders her sons to hurt Jason the same way he hurt her (She wanted to leave him with nothing)

3. “This day it seems heaven has rained many blows justly on the head of Jason”. Does Jason deserve this fate?

Euripides includes many characters who soon become just an act of revenge to Medea
- Although Jason did wrong, and did deserve to feel the hurt he had put Medea through after everything she had done for him too many people were sacrificed in an act of revenge
- The death on King Creon and Princess Glauce were made just so she would remove any bit of happiness (She did not consider others)
- The death of her 2 sons. Although she had a conscience, Medea still chose to go with the murder just so she could get back at Jason for loving another.
It makes sense as to why Medea would want him to suffer, but too many lives were lost only in order to put Jason through suffering.
