  3. describes the ways children interact with each other. This theory has six stages: unoccupied play, solitary play, spectator/onlooker play, parallel play, associative play, and social/cooperative play.
  4. During solitary independent play, children play alone with objects without interacting with others even when they are near. Another example can include, when a kid is playing with a toy of some sort, kids will look and watch, not in a negative sense, but its actually helping them to learn and grow their mindset when watching other kids play.

  2. is an educational approach that emphasizes individualized instruction and self-paced learning.
  3. Maria, with her own observation, saw that children absorb knowledge when they have their own understanding of the environment, teaching themselves with the environment.
  4. Maria's experiences made her think about and build a natural designed material that would make the classroom environment for children to learn independently. Children could pay attention in class and work on developing their self-help skills.

2. Social Learning Theory

3. Many of our actions are not learned through conditioning but rather, through imitation and observing others. When young children aren’t sure what to do, they often copy or model what they see others are doing. Environment and the individual are closely related, we aren’t just a product of our surroundings, but we influence our surroundings.

4. Much like children copy words or actions they see their parents carry out, older children imitate their friends. Their brains are obviously more developed and they are more aware of social situations and cues, so they feel the need to “fit in.”

3. The Attachment Theory suggests infants will naturally seek close relationships with caregivers who can provide them with safety. The quality of the attachment  can have long-lasting effects on the child's emotional and social development.

4. The idea that if a child feels safe because of proximity to their “special” caregiver, that child then has more of a chance at exploring freely and the discoveries made will be  more and richer than a child with an ambivalent attachment. For example, a child with secure attachment to a caregiver may learn slightly quicker since the child would be less likely to restrain exploration.

3. There are 8 levels of intelligence, but everyone isn't born with their full intelligence.  In the 90's Gardner started "The Good Project" which helped students reflect on daily ethical dilemmas and give them the tools to resolve them.

4. Most recent experiment with Wendy Fischman, recorded how different college groups think of different college goals, and emphasize liberal arts & sciences. It was supported by MIT press published "The Real World of College" and his most recent work "A Synthesizing Mind". In addition, Gardner is directing an international study of United World Colleges.

3.Basic Tenets of their Theory
  • Theorized development occurred in different stages based upon the children's age. 
  • Children utilize their schemas (ideas about the world) to process the world around themselves.
  • The stages: Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete operational, formal operational.

4. 1 example to support understanding of Theory 
  • These schemas can be influenced by experiences that contradict that schema. I.E. a child might originally think all horses are white because they’ve only seen white horses. This schema would be adjusted upon the child seeing a brown horse. This process applies to adults too!

3.Basic Tenets of their Theory
  • The zone of proximal development refers to the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can achieve with guidance and encouragement from a skilled partner.


4. 1 example to support understanding of Theory 
  • An example of this can be seen in testing a child’s ability to recognize colors. The child may easily be able to point to a red card and tell the examiner that the card is red. Using Vygotsky’s theory you would want to find the limit of the child's capability. You could for example do this by painting half the red card green. You could then ask the child to point to the color red. This would require the child to demonstrate an understanding of the different colors.
