Thinking Map
  *Circle Maps*
What is it? A resource used to develop thinking skills about a particular topic
How it works:
-If the book and lesson were about fruits I would have students engage in a circle map about apples. I would have them write the word apples in the center of the circle. After reading the book about apples, students would write a word they think of when they think of apples and describing words. Ex: juicy, red, green, healthy, sweet, apple pie, apple cider, etc. This activity is a brainstorming activity which isn't stressful but tests knowledge.
-This is a manageable activity for students to get involved in and is a hands on assignment.
-This activity can be used for all grade levels, all levels of thinking, and for any subject/specific curriculum.
-This activity can be done individually on paper, or on the white board and graph paper.
How this is useful:
-There are many purposes to this assignment such as demonstration of learned material and vocabulary.
-For learners who have a difficult time writing out words/ L1 learners they can draw pictures instead of writing words on the outer circle.
-"Teachers use circle maps to...."
1) Define
2) Brainstorm
3) List
4)Define
5) Tell everything they know

Using Circle Maps in a lesson: 1) Select the specific 5-7 tier words and explicitly teach them. I would make sure to use words that are important and words that have instructional potential, as well as conceptual understanding. I would use research called the seven step process. I would use all of the seven step processes but would focus on having them write and orally say the word. 2) Read a book that has the specific tier words. 3) Have students participate in the circle map activity discussing a theme or an important word that was in the book.

*- Low Tech resources are important for student success but I believe that students get easily bored by worksheets. I believe that high tech resources such as games, online activities, audio tapes, and many other resources are more valuable and are better equipped for student success.

-Helps students process/organize their writing which can help later on with writing.
-Help with higher level thinking processes
-Many teachers have students do this with a partner which helps expand on each students thoughts. This also works on listening and speaking skills.

Student testimonies from a school:
-"They help me organize my thoughts."
- "I like the circle map best because I like getting down my ideas."
-"They help me a lot with my writing."

How is this helpful to teachers?
-This is helpful to teachers because they can give this to students before a lesson to find out prior knowledge about the particular subject. Also, students can be given this after the lesson to show learned content. This honestly is a great assessment measure and is very beneficial for ELL'S

-Use this especially after reading a book to check knowledge of important tier words.
-When starting a lesson. For example if you are going be teaching ELLs about animals that live in the ocean you may want to do a circle map to first see what ELLs know about the ocean in general.
