Writing (60 minutes)

• Academic Writing:

• Task 1: You are given a visual representation of information, such as a graph, chart, table, diagram, or map. You must summarize and compare the data in your own words (150 words minimum). The task assesses your ability to describe trends, patterns, and key features.

• Task 2: You must write an essay in response to a question or argument (250 words minimum). It may ask you to present an argument, discuss advantages and disadvantages, or propose solutions. You are expected to support your opinions with clear reasoning and examples.

• General Training Writing:

• Task 1: You will be asked to write a letter based on a given situation (150 words). The letter could be formal, semi-formal, or informal, depending on the context (e.g., writing to a company, a friend, or a colleague).

• Task 2: Similar to Academic Writing, this task requires writing an essay (250 words minimum) in response to a prompt on a social or general issue.

Scoring: Writing is scored based on:

• Task Achievement/Response: How well you answer the question and cover all parts of the task.

• Coherence and Cohesion: The clarity and structure of your writing, as well as logical flow.

• Lexical Resource: The range of vocabulary used.

• Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The variety and correctness of grammar.

4. Speaking (11-14 minutes)

• Format: The speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. It consists of three parts:

• Part 1 (4-5 minutes): The examiner introduces themselves and asks you questions about familiar topics such as your hometown, hobbies, work, studies, and family. This part helps the examiner assess your ability to answer questions naturally.

• Part 2 (3-4 minutes): You are given a task card with a topic to speak about. You’ll have 1 minute to prepare and can take notes. Then, you need to talk for 1-2 minutes without interruption. The examiner may ask one or two follow-up questions related to your response.

• Part 3 (4-5 minutes): The examiner will ask more detailed and abstract questions related to the topic from Part 2. This part assesses your ability to discuss and elaborate on ideas in depth.

Scoring: Speaking is assessed based on:

• Fluency and Coherence: How well you can speak without hesitation and structure your responses logically.

• Lexical Resource: The variety and appropriateness of your vocabulary.

• Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The complexity and accuracy of your grammar.

• Pronunciation: How clearly and understandably you pronounce words, though heavy accents won’t penalize you if the examiner can understand you.

Scoring System (Band Scores):

The IELTS scoring system is on a band scale from 0 to 9, with half-band scores possible (e.g., 6.5, 7.5). Each section is scored separately, and the overall band score is the average of the four sections. For example:

• Band 9: Expert user (high level of proficiency)

• Band 8: Very good user

• Band 7: Good user

• Band 6: Competent user

• Band 5: Modest user

• Band 4: Limited user

• Band 3: Extremely limited user

• Band 2: Intermittent user

• Band 1: Non-user

• Band 0: Did not attempt the test

Test Duration:

• The total test duration is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.

• Listening: 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes for transferring answers)

• Reading: 60 minutes

• Writing: 60 minutes

• Speaking: 11-14 minutes (scheduled on the same day or up to a week before or after the other sections)

Additional Points:

• No penalty for wrong answers: In the Listening and Reading sections, you won’t lose marks for incorrect answers, so it’s better to guess than leave a question blank.

• Test Locations: The IELTS exam is available at authorized test centers worldwide. It is available in both paper-based and computer-based formats, though the Speaking test is always conducted face-to-face.
