Militarism is the focus on creating a a great military power. Many Nations in Europe focused on militarism. Militarism often influenced countries to do "war talk", which involved them making the citizens of a rival country look like "animals". The way that militarism helped start WWI is that it set a ground where war was easier than negotiation.

Imperialism is the extension of a country's influence towards another country. This heavy influence does take place in multiple countries, such as from Britain and France, which created an imperial rivalry against Germany. Multiple countries did hold some effect over others, Britain having the majority. After the Scramble for Africa, however, many European countries had to quickly rush for colonization of the last few territories, although some populated countries were also being considered. Take for instance- the Ottoman Empire- which got the attention of other European countries, and as a result, sparked a vast rivalry within Eastern Europe.

Nationalism is the feelings of being overly patriotic. For example, many revolutions and unifications of countries were heavily based upon a country's patriotism. As for during World War One, the winning alliance (Britain, Prussia, Russia, et cetera) became its own individual "New Europe". Before the war, however, describes that countries had only these feelings of patriotic expression and confidence towards their own country. These feelings also strongly suggest and support that countries, such as Britain, had a heavy negative view of other countries via books, newspapers and a number of short stories.

Assassination is the act of killing someone. Assassination played a big part of starting WWI. It started with the assassination of the arch duke Franz Ferdinand. Franz Ferdinand was nephew to the Austro Hungarian emperor (Franz Josef) and was net in line to take the throne from his uncle. The assassin was from Serbia, which led Austro Hungary to blame the Serbian government for the murder of Franz Ferdinand. Serbia then said that he assassins had nothing to do with Serbia. This led to the July crisis which was a month of arguing between Austro Hungary and Serbia, and then led to the start of WWI.
