I was also told that women are to be seen and not heard. I lived life thinking that if women weren't beautiful, which we all are, then we're unworthy of people's ear. I believed the old saying that "this is a man's world." 

So I ensure that my youngsters have a chance to be heard/understood. Many of the organizations on campus were not inviting to people of color. This included interest clubs and greek life. There were times when racism reared its ugly head in the form of costumes and "jokes." 

The BIPOC community at my school saw the need to create spaces for us.
