1. The most effective cube out of the three sizes tested was the smallest cube. Its rate of diffusion was the lowest, but 89.89% of the solution in the cube diffused, almost 30% more than the middle size cube.
2. The smallest cube was the most effective because of its high surface area to volume ratio. As seen in the table, it shows a 6.04 cm^2/cm^3 ratio, much higher than that of the largest cube at 2.22 cm^2/cm^3. This is because the cell didn't have to diffuse so much because of its already small volume. Additionally, the largest SA to volume ratio allowed for a relatively larger amount of diffusion in proportion to its size and volume. In regards to cell and tissue diffusion, factors that affect it (as shown by the lab) are volume and surface area.
3. The important part of the surface area is the surface area to volume ratio. A larger ratio allows for the transportation of substances more quickly in and out of the cell, allowing it to be more efficient. In comparison to the larger cell with more volume, not being able to quickly transport substances where they need to go.
4. Cube C would be the most effective at maximizing diffusion. This is evident because the higher the SA to volume ratio is, the more effectively substances can be transferred in and out of the cell, utilizing more surface area for a smaller volume.
5. There is cell division which allows cells to divide and spread nutrients and exchange gases. With new cells, there are more surfaces for diffusion and the exchange of gases throughout the body.
6. If the bacteria's surface area to volume ratio was too big, then it wouldn't be able to effectively diffuse the substances it needs into the cell where they would need to go. For this reason, bacteria are naturally microscopic, allowing them to transfer substances and waste in and out quickly.
7. The advantage of being multi-cellular is that large organisms can develop certain specialized cells for the different parts of their bodies. This allows for smaller cells to work only on specific things instead of having to transport the needed substances for all the functions of the body. Since the cells are specialized, they are much more efficient in the processes that they need to complete.
