In line 1, the poet used euphamism by saying “waiting for dark” and by doing that, the poet underlined the hopelessness of the persona by referring to death. Also in line 17 the poet uses a symbol as he says “he lost his color” and he emphasizes that the persona lost his joy of life in the war as Wilfred Owen uses “color” as a symbol which is symbolizing the joy of life of the persona. And in line 6 the poet used the metaphor “ till gathering sleep had mothered them from him” in order to convey pity for the soldier who is disabled and shows the persona to be a monster. This metaphor also refers to the phsical and mental pain of the persona.

The poet uses repitition technique to reflect his strong sense of loss. In the first stanza there is a repitition of the word ‘voices’ since he hears the voices coming from outside and it reminds him of his old, healthier self. He is so traumatized because of the accident and the idea of not being able to join the people who is outside, having fun is the reason why the voices stuck in his mind. His obsession to his younger times because of his loss and his suffer due to the voices being repeated in his mind is reflected with an effective repitition.
