There are lots of reasons to use tablets as well as others traditional ways to learn as providing origami to explain maths, baking to explain science and create a bedtime story to use mother tongue. As others technologies it needs some training that could give more confidence to teachers or tutors. Tablets have anytime, anyplace accessibility could give to student’s total control of their learning, but as free net browsing tools could take some dispersion to reach the education goals preconfigured.

A UNESCO report (Shuler, Winters et al. 2013) defines mobile learning as learning using mobile technologies such as mobile phones, smartphones, e-readers and Tablets, and argues that these devices offer ‘unparalleled access to communication and information’.

In my opinion these kind of device must have a step by step orientation guide in the case of Problem based Learning methodology. Everyone must verify if activities are solved to present the final collaborative work to obtain public reaction.
An example with a very simple problem: Do you think there are colours associated to women’s and men’s?
For answering for that question please look around, create several groups with the role play attribute to each student, and tell us how it works:

In Science and in Art (What is a colour?)
In fashion (Design and Networks);
In Life (Psychology and Biology contribute);
In Health (Medicine and alternative ways of life)

For schools, Universities or Training Centres?

In Portugal public schools are often very poor to provide tablets to teachers or students. Internet doesn’t work with regular connection. Working with tablets I only do it so in training centre or universities. I’ve worked with post graduate student in an ICT improving experience and it works very well, because for most of them was the first experience with the device.

In classes teachers must prepare all the materials and then create a scenario that could put everyone using their tablets. Interacting with an mediated approach is the main goal of device integration.

Groups and Collaborative Work

For me, the best way to form groups of students for work together is to perceive their individual skills, with a previous inquiry to found each other knowledge about things, learning and life.
Others forms to bring students together into a group doesn’t work and it’s a factor of discussions and less learning improvements. For keeping my students focused during collaborative projects, I must prepare a pedagogic negotiation document with specific rules for that case, so they all signed and agree follow until is finished. After the task, if everything is all right they get a smile or a badge that give the right to have a party, a visit outside school if they reached all the goals.
My strategies used to assess group work are participation, enrolment in the task, attention to details, help colleagues that doesn't understand something and truly collaborate with each other. These assessments are explained in that pedagogic negotiation document that every student signed in a previous phase.
