The Role of Genetics in Cognitive Development

The chart illustrates how the influence of genes, family environment, and unique experiences on cognition change with age. Early on, family environment plays a significant role in cognitive development, but as children grow older, genetic factors increasingly account for cognitive differences. By adolescence, genetic influence peaks, while shared family environment diminishes in importance.

Tucker-Drob, E. M., Briley, D. A., & Harden, K. P. (2013).

Environment:

Early brain development is shaped by environmental factors, including prenatal nutrition and exposure to toxins like alcohol. Postnatally, the environment plays a more direct role in brain plasticity and cognitive development. Experiences such as enriched or deprived environments impact how the brain builds neural circuits.

Experiences:

The brain's plasticity in the early years allows for experiences to shape synaptic connections. Enriched experiences strengthen connections, while deprivation, such as institutional care without proper interaction, leads to abnormal brain development. Face and language processing studies show how early experience refines neural pathways, impacting long-term cognitive abilities.

Tierney, A. L., & Nelson, C. A. (2009).

Genetic factors account for 50-70% of individual differences in cognitive ability. As children grow, genetics play an increasing role in shaping cognitive development, particularly in enriched environments where children can make choices about their learning experiences. This interaction between genes and environment helps explain the growing influence of genetics with age. For example, children in high socioeconomic status (SES) environments are better able to realize their genetic potential compared to those in lower SES contexts.

Tucker-Drob, E.

Environmental factors significantly shape a child's cognitive development. Key influences include nutrition, exposure to diseases, and maternal-child interactions. For example, deficiencies in iodine and iron can lead to cognitive delays, while exposure to toxins like lead can impair brain function. Maternal depression and a lack of stimulation also result in developmental delays. Interventions that improve nutrition and provide cognitive stimulation are essential to promoting healthy brain development.

Ford, N. D., & Stein, A. D. (2015).
