Chosen Topic

The topic I have chosen for this assignment is a advertising campaign promoting the purchase of Sporks.

Target Audience

The target audience for this campaign is people who need a low fuss dining experience such as campers and people on the move and environmental conscious people. I believe that these groups, particularly campers would be the target demographic for this campaign. This is because in most home dining situations conventional cutlery would be much more practice. A spork would be a handy, low fuss alternative for a person with limited space.

This advertisement shows a dining experience that is typically undertaken without the use of a Spork. It is for a fine dining experience. The add starts off too slow and is not engaging but it does showcase the restaurant well. Some of these visual ideas could come in useful.Using this contrast of fine dining and Sporks could be useful in the delivery of a humorous advertising approach.

Humour as an approach to advertising.

In 1986 a study was conducted by Stewart and Furse on creative advertising techniques and their sales effectiveness on audiences. The data gathered during this research suggested that "humour had strong positive effects on recall and comprehension. They suggest that humour gets attention, but other factors, such as brand-differentiating messages, are also needed to motivate consumers" (Hartnett, Kennedy, Sharp & Greenacre 2016, p. 106).

Referances

Hartnett, N, Kennedy, R, Sharp, B & Greenacre, L 2016 'Creative That Sells: How Advertising Execution Affects Sales', Journal of Advertising, vol. 45, no. 1, pp, 102-112.

QVAL Film Studio 2018,

Ray's Grill - Contemporary steakhouse restaurant advertisement, video, YouTube, 7 May, viewed 2 April 2022,<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UNCFXri1wM>.

This advertisement for Cadbury Creme Eggs is engaging and delivers memorable product placement. It works well because of the simplicity of the concept placed within a quick time frame. Whilst the concept is pretty fun, it could also be viewed as confusing to some.

Advertising length vs effectiveness

Many studies have been conducted into the effectiveness of an advertisement in relation to its duration. This data has become increasingly relevant now that online audiences have the ability to skip an advertisement after a short period of time. For this reason I have chosen to keep my advertisement as short and to the point as possible.

One of these studies specifically relating to YouTube advertisments "showed that an increased length led to decreasing completion rates and, thus, they considered that advertisements longer than 30 seconds were less effective." (Djafarova & Kramer 2019 p. 138)

CadburyIRE 2014 , Tonight's The Night - Cadbury Creme Egg Tv Ad (10 Seconds), video, YouTube, 14 January, viewed 2 April 2022, <https://www.youtube.com/watchv=ouNdCzUT83U&list=PL7hbH0MnzQmCYQI6xEJ2evq5YxO2ltiis>.

This set of advertisements for Nike shows people overcoming barriers to achieve goals. It is effective by engaging people on an emotional level. Some of these ads are very impactful but a few of them are too lengthy and I would turn them off given the chance.

Within Iain MacRury's 2008 book titled 'Advertising' Macrury
argues for the relationship between phycology, conflict and advertising. This is expanded on by explaining how our developmental experiences are shaped by obstacles and conflicts. The use of overcoming an obstacle can be an effective tool when approaching advertising. When approaching my own advertisement, I will incorporate this approach in my delivery.

"The developmental process tempers engagement with and within semio-cultural resources – capacities for language and communication, meaning, gesture and object relating. Advertising (in this culture) as one such frequently-encountered socio- semiotic resource becomes one important area of experience where anxiety and desire play out."
Assignment 2 reflections

Upon completing assignment 2 there are a few lessons that I have learnt.

- Thirty seconds is not a lot of time to convey a message. Initially I followed the treatment written during assessment one, this resulted in a two minute video. I had to cut out a lot of non essential footage to fit within the time limit.

- Lighting a dark room for filming is harder than I had anticipated. One of my shots came out fairly grainy despite using five lights.

- It is harder to find a plastic spork than you would imagine. After many trips to various shops and second hand stores I had to create one out of a spoon. This resulted in a very rustic spork.

- Simplicity is the key. When you only have a short time to convey a message, you had better keep it clear and simple.

Overall I am happy with how everything came together.
