         <description><![CDATA[<div>On August 19 1942, Canadians participated in an Allied attack on the port of Dieppe in northern France, occupied by German forces. Over 6050 predominantly Canadian infantry, supported by tanks, the navy, and the RAF. Within 10 hours, 3623 of the 6086 men who landed had been killed, wounded, or became prisoners of war. The mounting causalities caused a retreat, however, intelligence from this battle would become useful later in the war.</div>]]></description>

As many as 175,000 Canadians joined the Rhine Offensive and successfully drove the Germans back to Northern Germany. During their liberation of the Dutch towns, the people were discovered to be on the verge of starvation. On 22 April, a truce that enabled the Allies to provide relief to the Netherlands was negotiated.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As the Canadian forces freed the Netherlands and marched to Northern Germany, the Allies converged in Berlin. Hitler then committed suicide on 30 April as the Soviets entered the city. On 5 May, a ceasefire was declared. On 7 May, the German forces surrendered, and 8 May was declared by Allied leaders as VE day (Victory in Europe Day). The war ended in an Allied victory.</div>]]></description>
