We maintain our patients trust, prevent identity theft, protect their privacy, and operational integrity. It is vital we preserve the data of patients and prevent unauthorized use or disclosure of their medical data and that they are informed and well versed in protecting themselves as well. Watch this video that briefly explains this concept to allow us to be compliant in legal and regulatory laws like HIPAA.

In this day in age, electronic health records (EHRs) are evolving more and more into a collection of a variety of mass patient data. This includes sensitive patient information that make us a vulnerable target for hackers to breach. Healthcare providers must comply with the security, privacy, and breach notification requirements of HIPAA. Some of the most common technical safeguards include firewalls, antivirus software, data encryption, and cloud computing (Basil et al., 2024).

In this discussion, you will learn that electronic security consists of securing network information, user authentication, security threats, and tools used.
