Part of making Singapore a trading port requires two things, signing the treaties and also building up Singapore. As the first British Resident and Commandant of Singapore from 1819 to 1823, Farquhar was instrumental in establishing Singapore as a trading post and administrative center. He fostered diplomatic relations with local leaders, promoted economic development, and implemented policies that helped attract immigrants and traders to the island. Farquhar's contributions laid the groundwork for Singapore's emergence as a key port city in Southeast Asia.

i think sir stamford raffles was the founder of singapore. Raffles was the first to recognise the island as a natural choice for the new port he was seeking, as Singapore had a strategic location and many possessed a natural deep harbour, freshwater supplies, and timber for repairing ships. It was also located along the main trade route between India and China. Thanks to raffles, modern Singapore was born. Raffles met Temenggong Abdul Rahman to negotiate for a British trading post to be established on the island. The population of Singapore increased rapidly upon the arrival of Sir stamford Raffles, shaping Singapore to what it is today.

He was the man of action, carrying out the practical, day-to-day tasks to turn ideas into reality. Raffles is often credited with the founding of Singapore, some historians note that he was present on the island on only three occasions over five years, from January to February 1819, May to June 1819, and October 1822 to June 1823 – altogether for a total of less than 10 months. By comparison, as Resident, Farquhar played a significant role in the daily administration of the settlement in its critical early years. Farquhar in effect led the development of Singapore independently.

I think that Sir Stamford Raffles should be the founder of Singapore as from the start, it was Raffles who initiated to find a new trading port. As they had to:
-Be more involved with the India-China trade
-Interest in Spice Trade which was under the Dutch control
-Unsuitability of Existing British Trading Ports
: Bencoolen and Penang
Hence, Raffles started the search for a new port. Major William Farquhar had suggested the Karimun Islands, which proved unsuitable. During the process of finding a trading port, they were faced with problems with the Dutch, British and EIC. It was Raffles who resolved them. After discovering the Singapore was not occupied by the Dutch, they set out to set up a trading port, however, they were faced with issues with the Dutch - the Dutch claimed that Singapore was part of Johor-Riau, which was under the Dutch influence, so Singapore was theirs as it was in the Johor-Riau. After that, a story of Succession Dispute and Raffles Actions, he was the one who thought of the idea to go to the was-to-be Sultan, Tengku Hussein, and brought him to Singapore to sign an Agreement. Later on, the Dutch made treaties with the British
1824 Treaty: Allowed the British to set up a Trading Port.
1824 Anglo-Dutch Treaty, 17 March 1824: Spheres of Influence
1824 Treaty of Friendship and Alliance: Control over the whole of Singapore.
He was the one who came up with the ideas in which lead to the Success of Singapore, without that Singapore would not be founded.

William Farquhar played a significant role in the early development of Singapore and contributed greatly to its growth during the British colonial period. While Sir Stamford Raffles is often credited with founding Singapore, Farquhar's role in its early development should not be overlooked, as he played a vital part in shaping its early history and growth.

In 1819, he established a British trading post on the island, which later became a key part of the British Empire in Southeast Asia. His arrival marked the beginning of Singapore's transformation into a global port city. While Raffles had the vision and political clout, it was Farquhar who rolled up his sleeves and got stuff done. He allowed trade to flourish by keeping taxes low and the port open to all. He made practical decisions like tolerating gambling and opium to generate revenue, which might not seem like a glamorous thing today but it actually helped the economy get going fast. Moreover, he worked closely with the local communities—Malays, Chinese, Indians, and others—to build trust and cooperation.

Raffles, on the other hand, was only in Singapore for a few short visits and was more idealistic. He even criticised Farquhar for being too lenient and dismissed him, despite everything Farquhar had done to get Singapore on its feet.

My definition of a founder is someone who actually puts a name to something and contributes a lot to the forming of something, and I see that vision a lot in William Farquhar.

Despite my earlier post on Sir Stamford Raffles being the true founder of Singapore, William Farquhar could also be a close candidate. This is because, even if Raffles had the vision and political philosophy, Farquhar was the one who actually got his hands dirty and turned this vision in reality. William allowed trade to flourish due to keeping taxes low and a free port for all. Farquhar had made a decision to tolerate gambling and opium to generate revenue, although this decision costed him his job, it actually helped the economy to get going quickly. Raffles on the view of William Farquhar, was only in Singapore for a few short visits while William Farquhar was the first resident of Singapore. William Farquhar also worked quite closely with the local communities, such as the Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups to build trust ad cooperation.

John Crawfurd served as the second British Resident of Singapore from June 1823 to August 1826. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in establishing British sovereignty over Singapore by signing the final treaty with Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor and the Temenggong on 2 August 1824. This agreement, often referred to as the Crawfurd Treaty, formalized Singapore as a British possession.

Crawfurd was instrumental in implementing key elements of Stamford Raffles's vision for Singapore, laying the foundation for its economic growth. He focused on developing the settlement's infrastructure and governance, which contributed significantly to its transformation into a thriving port city.

In recognition of his contributions, several landmarks in Singapore bear his name, including Crawford Street, Crawford Lane, Crawford Bridge, and Crawford Park.

For a visual overview of this period in Singapore's history, you might find the following video informative:

Although Sir Stamford Raffles is officially credited with founding Singapore, William Farquhar played a more critical, hands-on role in its early development. He governed the settlement, maintained order, fostered trade, and worked closely with local communities. Without Farquhar’s pragmatic leadership, Singapore may not have thrived as quickly or effectively.

In my opinion , Sir Stamford Raffles is the real founder of Singapore. Although he was not the FIRST person to find Singapore , Sir Stamford Raffles is considered the real founder of Singapore as he established it as British settlement with a vision that shaped Singapore’s future as a global city. Also , in 1819 , he landed in Singapore and negotiated a treaty with the local rulers. That is why I think Sir Stamford Raffles is the real founder of Singapore
