I think the boy is not very wealthy or doesn't have any parents. He could be an orphan. "...Ain't you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face? No'm said the boy" -pg. 46. "But the boys weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance." -pg. 45. Since the purse was able to knock the boy down this suggests that he doesn't get enough to eat because teenage boys are usually a lot stronger than how strong Roger sounds. Roger was also trying to steal Mrs. Jones purse. He was probably trying to steal it because he didn't have money to buy a pair of shoes. His shoes could have been to small. "Now , here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes"- pg.49.

I think that Roger is not very wealthy because in the text on page 45 it says, "... when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse." This implies that he was trying to steal the purse to get some money. I aslo think that Roger doesn't have anyone at home or they are not around a lot because in the article on page 46 it says, "Ain't you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?" " No'm, said the boy." This shows that the boy may not have a family at home.

I believe that Roger comes from a poor family. It doesn't sound like his family, if he has one, is around a lot. Based on the way he acted toward Mrs. Jones, I think he has to scrounge money off people in order to sustain a life.
In the text, on page 46, it says "I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain't nobody home to tell you to wash your face?" "No'm." He answered Mrs. Jones' question by telling her that he doesn't have anybody home with him. Maybe he doesn't have a home.
It sounds like he is constantly on the run because on page 46, the text states: "Roger looked at the door-looked at the woman-looked at the door-and went to the sink". His actions here in the text have persuaded me to decide that he is deciding whether to run, or to stay.

I can infer Mrs.Jones is old fashioned because of how she acts or things she uses. For example, when Mrs.Jones is cooking she takes out Lima beans and ham From an icebox, Not very many people use ice boxes anymore (49). Another example, of Mrs.Jones being old fashioned is when she sits on a daybed which is a couch that can fold into a bed, most people nowadays call it a couch (48).

Mrs. Jones:
I can infer that Mrs. Jones is a southern high-mid-aged woman. She speaks and acts like that, "Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here." (pg.45) She knows how to teach lessons well. She thinks that being strict AND kind towards Rodger will teach him the lesson more than that of sending him to prison. Most people would immedeatly call the police, but Mrs. Jones made the boy understand whats good and bad. She also gave him food, cleaned him up, and rewarded him with money for his shoes when she thought he learned from her. "Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes." "...shoes got by devilish ways will burn your feet." "..from here on in, I hope you behave yourself." (pg. 49)

I think that Mrs Jones is confident and strong. Pg. 45 "Then she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front and shook him until his teeth rattled." even though many think that she is crazy, she was trying to prove a point to the boy. Rodger is a teenager that was trying to get some money for some new shoes, and I consider him to be introverted, because he doesn't say much. pg 48. " Then there was a pause, a very long pause." and pg 49 "the boy wanted to say something other than thank you, Ma'm to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but although his lips moves, he could't even say that..." I also believe that roger is poor. Pg 48 " I want a pair off blue suede shoes, said the boy" and doesn't have anyone to care for him. Pg 48 "There's nobody at my house, said the boy"This is why I believe that Mrs. Jones is confident and why Rodger is an introverted thug.

If an old woman almost got stolen from, they'd probably call the police, but she knows Roger is poor and in need, so she decides to help him out a little. In the story, she says," Now here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes...". She seems like a soft woman, and she wants to help others. She also said," Well, you didn't have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes. You could have asked me." She ended up being a lot softer than I thought she would be.

I think that Mrs. Jones is a strong, large, southern, and very caring woman. She's just very old-fashioned. The majority of people in her situation probably would have called the police, but when he was trying to rob her, she cleaned him up, fed him, gave him money, and let him go without legal punishment afterwards. That's more than generous. As she said in the story, "But you put yourself in contact with me... If you think that that contact is not going to last awhile, you got another thought coming. When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember the name Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones." She took a much... gentler approach than I expected. Though, I can kind of see why she wanted to help him. Roger, who we can assume had no family (Which BTW makes him an orphan, not homeless. Sorry, I had to say it. It was beginning to annoy me.), was only trying to do what he had to to stay alive. He was dirty, desperate and without a family. You have to admit that even if you looked at the boy in a bad way, you'd feel a bit of pity for his situation. It's just that Mrs. Jones reacted to her feelings and beliefs immediately rather than needing a moment to think about her actions. She already knew what she wanted to do, and she wanted to help Roger.
