The color palettes of his films are almost aways dark,  but at the same time convey the feeling of sadness, make the viewer feel comfortable with a nice choice of gray tones to the environments, broken most often by small elements with strong colors like red and orange.
Beyond the colors that please me, the stories always have some "unbelievable" element that makes me feel in an alternate world / in a different reality.
A good example of a very surreal and dark film, directed by Tim Burton, I love is The corpse bride.
