Barnhill's prose is pure magic. Every word is purposeful and lyrical, I was completely pulled in. This is one of the most stunning books I've read so far this year, and I think it will stay with me for some time. The genre of the book is somewhere in between fantasy and dystopian, as there are witches and dragons, but also a corrupt and evil government. It has been very...different from most other books because of the backstory and the character are wacky, sort of like a Kate Dicamillo character. I don't want to spoil anything , but this book is pretty sad. I think that if you like this book you would like Maxi's Secrets.

Red's grandmother gets very sick, and in a desperate moment, Red rushes to gather the ingredients for a potion. On the way she bumps into her worst enemy, Goldielocks. And Goldielocks just has to tag along. Maxi's secrets is a GREAT book it is so sad. It is about a boy who moves to a new town and who gets from his parents. the dog you find out in the first chapter is told that she dies. The best part in Maxi's secrets was how each chapter has its very own secret from Maxi. If you liked this book you would also like counting thyme, Booked and Ghost!
