The war was fought between Rome and Carthage. The war was fought three times, the war began in 264 BC in Sicily. The war started because Carthage wanted more land that Rome owned. The war ended when Rome defeated Carthage and took back its land. The essential question that matches is ¨why do people seek change¨ this question works because Carthage wanted new land to do new things and seek changes. This was beneficial because Rome won the fights and didn't have to give any of there things away. Also Carthage was one of Romes biggest rivals and after Rome defeated them almost all of Carthage's people had died or were sold into being a slave.

Rome had been getting destroyed by Hannibal and Carthage for 15 years after Rome tried to make Carthage land into Roman provinces because of their policy of imperialism. Rome lost the second Punic war in 218 BC but they fought back against Carthage with Roman legions in 146 BC. The essential question, "What causes people to seek change" relates to this event because the Roman people had had enough of Hannibal destroying Italy and decided to fight back.

Evie & Riley

In 133 BC, the Romans were justified in calling the Mediterranean sea Mare Nostrum, or "our sea". The Roman Empire took over all of the land surrounding the sea. Some regions allied with Rome or was a province of Rome (land under roman rule). The legion expanded Romes empire through the sea. Society should be governed by a serious and strong leader. Rome was powerful and was able to satisfy and control its empire and conquered land. Rome took over, but didn't take too much freedom from the people. They let the people keep some things that they wanted, like their customs, money, and local government. This was beneficial to Rome because the Roman population grew as the land started to expand. They had better armies and their armies grew stronger as they expanded.

133 BC Gracchus Reforms

Some of the first people to attempt reform were Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus. They were two young patrician brothers elected as tribunes to hold the plebeians' interests. Tiberius was elected in 133 BC, and Gaius ten years later. Tiberius wanted the senate to give land to poor. Gaius desired more reforms and proposed using public funds to buy grain for the poor. The Gracchi brothers' reforms were engendered by the wealthy class in Rome lowering the prices of grain and other foods so much that the farmers could not lower their prices anymore. The latifundia, or large estates bought buy the wealthy Romans, were the cause of this. People sought change at this time because the lives of the poor were unfair and the rich people in the latifundia took advantage of slave labor to produce vast amounts of grain with little cost. The Gracchus brothers' reforms angered the senate, who saw the brothers as a threat to their power. The senators and their hired thugs killed them and thousands of their supporters in waves of street violence. The Gracchi brothers were important to Rome because they were some of the first to push for major reforms.

Photos featured: 1.
31 BC Octavian Augustus

Kerry and Jen
In 31 B.C., the senate declared Octavian the first citizen and gave him the title of Augustus, which means "Exalted One." He ruled until A.D. 14 and ended the 500 year old republic. Octavian had absolute power, but was careful not to call himself a king because of hatred of the Etruscan king. During his leadership, the age of the Roman empire began. Augustus created a foundation for a stable government by enforcing the laws and opening high-level job to skilled men of any class. Augustus made many reforms, and making the tax system for fair was another. He ordered a census, which is a population count, to be taken. He also set up a postal service, gave everyone new coins [to make trade easier], and gave the unemployed work of building roads/temples, and to farm the land. Octavian finally created a government which lasted 200 years. He made many reforms and changes to benefit Rome which made him a great leader. Octavian wanted to make sure he didn't have all the power, and wasn't named king. He decided to share his power with everyone, so that they were all equal.
