Armies did not clash in the state of Connecticut during the civil war but they were very involved trying to help in battles outside of the state. Connecticut helped supply a bunch of weapons and they even manufactured munitions. Governor William Alfred Buckingham was able to raise 54,882 volunteers for military service out of a population of only 461,000 people. Connecticut was impacted by the civil war because the smaller state had to figure out how to contribute to war efforts and get things going smoothly. The state had never really faced any violence and they had to adjust immediately to fight for their cause.

The 14th Connecticut Infantry played a prominent role in the army of the Potomac's defense of cemetery ridge during the battle of Gettysburg. The state of Connecticut provided 54,882 volunteers. There weren't any battles in the state but they provided many supplies. Benjamin Tyler Henry produced the Henry rifle, a long range weapon.
Governor William Alfred Buckingham

Buckingham was a prosperous business man before becoming governor in 1858. Buckingham had met Abraham Lincoln and liked the man. Their view points were the same so when Lincoln became president, William Buckingham proved to be a determined organizer. He was on the unions side which means he believed slavery was wrong and should be abolished. On April 1861, the war department asked for one regiment to fill the states quota and Buckingham authorized five. He was very helpful when it came to raising volunteers because he worked with what he had. Overall, he had a big impact on the war and the efforts made by Connecticut because without him there may not have been as many volunteers for the military.

Foote was born in New Haven Connecticut. He accepted an appointment as a midshipman in the navy and he spent 39 years traveling the world. In 1861 he was put in charge of the Union fleet in the upper Mississippi. He collaborated with Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to capture Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February of 1862. He was slightly wounded during the capture of Fort Donelson but he shrugged it off but unfortunately was still on crutches when he attacked Island No. 10. He was unable to continue commanding. After much pleading to get back into the action of the war he was put in charge of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron but while arriving, he died from his injury. Overall, he had a big impact on the war and the efforts made by Connecticut because without him the capture of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson may not have been accomplished.
