The political message was the promotion of white supremacy and black powerlessness. Lynchings were photographed and published as postcards, which were popular souvenirs in the U.S. ,expanding fear.
Victims were sometimes shot, burned alive, or tortured and mutilated in public events, with any legal conscience.
