In the USA lynchings of African Americans, commonly by hanging, became frequent in the South after the Reconstruction era. Most lynchings were conducted by white mobs against black victims, who decided by their own hand that the black community was guilty.

The political message was the promotion of white supremacy and black powerlessness. Lynchings were photographed and published as postcards, which were popular souvenirs in the U.S. ,expanding fear.

Victims were sometimes shot, burned alive, or tortured and mutilated in public events, with any legal conscience.
