Thoughts for Today

This morning as a drove on a familiar highway interchange which involves a long sharp turn and lower speeds, I passed a slower truck and another car which was not travelling very fast, seemingly by choice. I waited to see if one of them would challenge me as I passed, and neither did. So, I moved like a rock out of a slingshot beyond them both, and said to no one " ok, then, if that's how it is, see you later".
Sometimes we are the passers, and it's not malicious, it's just practical and reasonable, by choice or by chance. Leaving people behind on the road is not something we are sad about or feel guilty of when we are driving--either someone has a slower car or just wants to go slower. I don't care which--it's not important.
But in life sometimes I have felt pity for the people being passed, like if I get better grades or make more money. And maybe the there is a lesson there from driving. Perhaps I should recognize that people make choices which regulate their speed of advancement, and for that matter, their destination. Rather than judging them by my own haste, better to leave them to their own plans, be it as it may. People don't need my pity. A lift now and then, help with a blown tire--sure. But it's really not my business where they are going or what determines the rate of speed.
There are also those who pass me--and I am the one left in the dust. I do not need their pity, either.

Conquer Stress

Stress shrinks your brain's available solution pathways! Fight or flight is a binary response, and most modern problems don't get solved that way. I mean, try it, but don't blame me when you lose your job, have a bloody nose, are brought up on assault charges, and nobody loves you.
Raise dopamine in your brain by thinking about things you are grateful for. Make a list. Right now. I have one at my desk for emergencies.
Name your state of mind and take control of your own thoughts and feelings. "I am freaking out right now. My chest feels like it is constricted. I am afraid of..........etc"
Breathe deeply. 3 times.
Take a walk.

Dealing with Anger and Frustration--10 steps:

1. Breathe. Count 10 slow breaths.
2. Talk to yourself about the problem. Work it out in your own words.
3. Try empathy. If someone is bothering you, think of what you might have done or felt in his or her place. Are you so very different, truly?
4. Model grace. Practice makes (almost) perfect.
5. Be patient. Remind yourself that time, like water lapping a beach, tends to smooth wrinkles.
6. Remember what is important. Are you really prioritizing correctly?
7. Laugh. At something, anything.
8. Can you do something to make it better right now?
9. Repeat Step 5. Perhaps given a little time away from the situation, you might see it differently.
10. Ask someone for help--someone you can trust and be yourself with.
