This statement held true in West Indian cricket,that is to say that Cricket was seen as a gentlemen's game that is to say it would be played in a gentlemanly manner. 
The one side to the story that everyone believed was what only "Whites" could play cricket and that it was a gentleman's sport.   
This was proven untrue when the 1970s West Indies team dominated the game for many years.
