• While its scientific name means ‘fire-coloured cat’, the red panda actually shares more similarities with bears and racoons.
• Like the giant panda, the red panda’s diet is largely made up of bamboo, although it also eats roots, fruit, eggs and small lizards.
• The red panda has a modified wrist bone that acts as a sixth digit or thumb.
• Red pandas produce a number of vocalisations, the strangest of which is a ‘quack-snort’.
