He hasn't got a name as he is a side character. My character is considered to be the "Hype Man" or a typical lad. Later on my character shows up in a party scene hosted by Tyler (Jason) were we berate a group of girls at that party. My character looks up to Russell and sees him as the alpha of the group. He would never show it though.

My second character is another no-named character and is seen in a monologue as the boyfriend of the 'Girl with a flower in her hair' character. My character seems to be very suspicious but very worried for the girlfriend as she is pregnant. He lives in the 1960s era. When women started taking control with what they can do with their body. As he has grown up with more power over women, he isn't used to his pregnant girlfriend denying him and ignoring what he says. He clearly doesn't agree with abortion and finds her disgusting whenever the topic is brought up. There are many flashbacks in Girls Like That, for example one goes back 89 years to 1928. A time where women had very little rights and were at the beck and call of all men. This was also a time where hitting women in public was a common occurrence.

The topic of this flashback is abortion and how women are starting to gain the freedom to choose. 

Her boyfriend strongly disagrees with the idea that women have should be the one to choose. This prompts him to try and persuade his girlfriend that what she is about to do is wrong.

This eventually causes the breakup between them two. She wants her freedom, while he wants no relationship with a murderer.

This is a very sensitive topic. There is the view that abortion is murder and is a violation of the babies right to live. There is the other side of the argument that it is the women's body and they should be the one to choose. There are other factors in this topic such as if the baby is the product of a sexual assault case then is it right to have it? 

Thats why this is such a sensitive and difficult topic to discuss because it isnt clear, it isnt black and white. She gets some advice from her mum to dress for success. She wears a new dress for work and is immediately approached by one of her 3 named partners of the firm named Stanley. He proceeds to compliment her and then touches her in places deemed inappropriate for the workplace. 

This topic is tricky to talk about. This is because sexual harassment in the workplace hasn't got a very clear line that decides what is or isn't sexual harassment. In this flashback it is very clear what Stanley's main intent is. His actions does the talking.

The scene depicts that Stanley had a lot of power over her at the beginning then his power starts to decrease as she gets more leverage against him and starts to make threats.

But there was a hidden message behind that. 
That is the fact that she always had the power over him. Women have the power to destroy a mans life and reputation all at the same time with one allegation. Even if Stanley did no such thing, she had the power to destroy his life anyway. We explore different events in the past and present expressing these views and changes in individual scenarios. 

We started "Girls Like That" around 2 months ago, and within that time frame we needed to: learn lines, gather essential props and costumes, picture the set and then make that imagination into a reality and then build character. When doing this we had to take into consideration that our budget for any props or costumes was very limited and thankfully everyone that had to was able to provide the funds that was needed. With the time frame of 2 months we had to act fast in terms of: creating the set,  learning lines and gathering costume and props. 
But with a diverse group of people, means a difference  in abilities for example I was one of the first to have learnt my lines which allowed me to focus on my actual acting while on stage and it allowed me to have time to build my characters.

It was a week before show day and we all began to feel the pressure. There was a handful of people that still had their scripts in hand while rehearsing which didn't help with the nerves. 

Our show day was on Thursday 9th June. It was the Tuesday before the show day and we all were off script which was great but we still have 2 scenes to stage, block and set the transitions between them. So we spent the last days working on them and running through the whole of our show.

On the same Tuesday, we experienced some emotional issues.  As nerves run high and the pressure builds some students start to feel emotional. We had 2 incidents of students walking out of rehearsals. They returned of course but morale started to fall.

We performed our show on Thursday with no hiccups like in the last couple of days.
I believe the performance went smoothly. I was in a constant state of confidence and then a state of fear. By the end I was happy and proud. Especially Of Gabriella Welton as she attended rehearsals even though she had Tonsillitis. When I saw her arrive on show day I knew we were going to perform well. I was worried and excited at the exact same time which was a very new experience to me as most of the time either one or the other never both. I was like this because of the fact that this show was the time where we as a whole group would show what we have learned and how much we have improved throughout the year from MK50 to Girls Like That. These achievements were only possible through the knowledge and stability our tutors provided, and with the help of the Level 3 Year 2 students I can honestly say that Girls Like That was a testimony to what a small society of actors and performers can do when they buckle down and focus on the most important part of any show. The Show itself.

I played a total of 4 characters. 1. A student of a secondary school who is friends with Tyler and Russell who are 2 key characters in the group of lads. 2. I play Steve who is the famous security guard in Jeremy Kyle Show, he pulls apart the fight between Scarlett and a no-named character for a short while. 3. I play a boyfriend of a pregnant teen. He is based in the 1960s and is against abortion full stop. 4. I play a boy who is on a date with Scarlett at mcdonalds. He receives the naked photo of Scarlett and is said to have sent it around his school in which Scarlett had transferred to earlier in the play. 

My requirements for my characters were to: have a costume ready and have a detail to that costume that shows the personality of my character for example having the shirt sleeves rolled up and shirt un-tucked to show his scruffy nature and stereotypical lad attitude to life. I used "The Inbetweeners" as inspiration for my character specifically Jay (from inbetweeners). I thought to myself when studying him that his character was very open to things and always lied about anything to make himself look better than everyone. I decided to use his personality and put a spin on it. I decided to instead of make him louder than everyone else, I would make him a sheep in a herd. I kept his trait in which he tried to make himself look and seem cooler. This was done to emphasise that point of the hierarchy in a group. I was in the middle but I wanted the top spot.
For the Security guard there was only one person to look in to and that was Steve from The Jeremy Kyle Show. He is the stereotypical bodyguard, big build and a height advantage to almost anyone in his way. Sydney Sandever is the girl who starts to attack Scarlett in the scene, this is where I as the security guard steps in to break up the fight. But the comparison between me and Sydney is like the difference between a boot and an ant. I was so afraid of harming her during this scene that I held back on using all my strength. But through some interesting inspiration from Wyn, I was reassured not to hold back which made the conflict between us 2 become more believable each time we rehearsed it. In the scene I picked up on a idea to raise my shoulders to give of the stereotype of guards having almost no neck. When watching clips of Steve I noticed a common mannerism he has and that is that he almost always never smiles or talks and always holds his arms infront of him with both hands together.

The boyfriend character needed more research and development. With videos and real life experience I was able to develop my previous characters smoothly but with this character I haven't been in his situation and finding any clips that could help me was near impossible. So I had to go back to a Acting Specialism lesson I had with Wyn in the past and use some advice I got from him. Before the scene started I had to recall to a moment in my life where I wanted something and I had to persuade someone but it wasn't working. That allowed me to tap into the emotions I had at that time and it allowed me to "play the emotion not the situation" I used that emotion of frustration in the scene to resemble my characters views.
My last character was The Date scene guy. His personality changed within 30 seconds, in the story of the play it would have been a couple of days. I am very glad to have been able to use some of the experience I got from Compos Mentis Theatre. Their show was based around Bipolar disorder. A disorder that changes your emotion from one extreme to another. Seeing the cast of CMT doing this allowed me to replicate that same action but on a lower scale. I believe that without ever doing any work with them it would have been a little difficult to change my emotion on the fly.

The limits we faced as a group


Throughout the time frame we had to create this show, we had always at least 1 person away or of sick or just hadn't turned up. This hindered our productivity as we had never done a full run through until the very last day. I believe something must have happened to everyone that was slacking a little. As it seems to me that everyone started putting 100% effort in at the last minute (not literally). 

Another limit we all faced was the budget scare throughout the time frame. If anyone couldn't provide the proper capital to buy the props and costume we need then we would of had to have break in to the budget we collected a few months back. But there was no certainty that we would have enough to provide a majority of the people in the class. But luckily we all had enough capital to afford the costume and or props needed for the show.

We faced a challenge when creating the steps for the set. I made a mistake when assuming we needed to have different coloured steps. But majority wanted matching colours so when re-painting one set of steps, we didn't have enough white paint to mix with black to make a grey. Scarlett is the victim and everyone else is the attacker. She has her naked photo sent around the entire school and eventually to another school she transfers to. 

There is a scene in the play where a group of girls are examining the body of Scarlett through the photo and comparing themselves to her while insulting her at the same time. "And I feel good because my breast are bigger than hers". 

In an act to make themselves feel better after seeing Scarlett starting to enjoy her life more after she transfers to another school, they seize the moment and in an act of jealousy sends her date the naked photo. Which starts the whole cycle again.

Mannerisms: Day dreams often, pinches the area between the thumb and the index finger to keep his mind active. Face palms a lot. Is often quiet and mindful of what he says.

Popularity and Social Status: Is mates with most people, he believes he chose his friends wisely. He is in the middle of the hypothetical hierarchy.

Clothing: Untidy school uniform, barely follows the dress code as he wears tracksuits and trainers. Wears his top button undone, shirt hanging out at all sides, wears a watch on his left wrist and rubber bracelets to show his support for a cause.

Ambitions in life: He wants to own a business one day, but never talks about it with his mates because he believes that no one would care so what's the point. His real aim is to be able to retire at an early age and prove his parents and everyone around him wrong. But most importantly prove to himself that he is capable of great things. 

Intellect: He is smarter than he looks or acts. Probably just under the level of intellect and maturity that Jay has, but is significantly smarter than Tyler or Russell.

We later on decided to implement a PowerPoint projection during the whole performance.

It consisted of pictures to help the audience identify where the scene was set. At the beginning there was facts dotted around the projection. We later added the views of each character on the situation. When we have fully formed  the triangle, we have Emily in the centre with everyone  facing her. We begin to belittle Emily calling her names such as "slut" and "Skank". 
One by one we insult her and while we do that we step in her direction in a sharp dynamic to show our aggression. 
By the very end we decided to have everyone call her a slut at the same time. We originally staged it where by the end of the scene Harriett, Coral and Emily would move to the centre of the stage and position themselves to show the hypothetical hierarchy they have formed. 
But at the last minute it was switched up so that instead of just Harriett, Coral and Emily moving, it was changed so everyone in that scene would move into a formation. This would be built around a sequence of message alerts. The first 2 sequences are short and snappy. The third movement sequence is extended to show the audience how quickly an image can be spread through a school.

This is one of the first times we could show the gender roles and equality that was 1928. 
The scene had all the cast on stage, it was a party. 
Sydney, Jason and Holly were downstage talking to each other and the audience as the main focus of the scene while everyone else filled up the space behind them by conversing to each other, drinking and smoking. This also contained a moment were Jason slaps Sydney, this needed staging and blocking down to it.
While Sydney is doing her monologue everyone else is in slow motion to make the scene seem a lot more interesting. 
We needed props for this scene, props such as : Fake cigarettes and champagne flutes. I was able to get the champagne flutes and Coral acquired the fake cigarettes.

This is done to show the girls examining the naked picture and comparing themselves to her.

This shows the audience the two perspectives people had on the picture. This scene was originally going to be a small scene in a corridor where a fight brakes out between Scarlett and a no-named girl who is presumed to be Russell's girlfriend. The tension between the 2 grow to the point that the girl starts to fight Scarlett. 

Security Steve is seen to stop the fight before it starts but after learning all about how much of a slit Scarlett is seen as, he decides to give up and let the girls fight. This would be the breaking point for Scarlett as it is stated she has nothing to lose.

Its a scene that consists of a man pleading for his girlfriend to keep the baby, but the girlfriend is having none of it.
This scene went through a couple of changes in terms of the movement and flow of both the performers. We originally had both of the performers standing and talking to each other. Moving in a pre-made pattern. Nearing the final show day we changed it so where I was on the steps in which I looked like I was talking to myself but in reality I was talking to her. Showcasing the issue of bullying.  

The staging took a couple of changes, at first we had the 2 on the steps at the back with the girls looking up stage and berating her.
But it was changed to have the 2 down stage and the others looking on the same direction. She does her monologue that reveals all the flashbacks are situations her family have been through. She talks about how the attitudes of men and women have changed throughout the years have changed and how she knows that whatever happens to her now, wont matter to her or anyone later in life.

This was worked on very quickly as we didn't have much time left to work on it. 
We decided that everyone should appear on stage as either the flashback characters or the students of the school.
She ends her monologue and walks up stage but turns back to signal that this was the end of the play.
