Impact of Peers

In this episode of Life Unexpected, Lux the main character doesn't really have any peers at the time. She is thrown out of her foster home and meets her birth parents for the first time. The episode is about her meeting her parents for the first time and how she has lived all on her own for the past 15 years. Her not having any close peers is probably the direct result of her moving to different foster homes through out the years. The book talks about how there are different reasons for popularity and also different reasons for rejection. Since up to this episode she hasn't talk to any friends her age, she could be one of the adolescents that has been the 'outcast' in schools because she had moved around. She has never been able to settle into on school and make lasting friends. She could even fit into the second group of rejected teens that are shy, and anxious. These are all just guesses because I don't know what her school life is like.

The impacts of family on Lux has been negative through her early years in life. She traveled through 7 different foster care homes and has grown up thinking that her birth parents never cared for her wellbeing. When she meets her birth parents for the first time she realizes that they didn't know how badly she has had it and now they want to change that. The mom takes her in with her new fiance while the dad is now also supporting and spending time with Lux. The textbook brings up how it's not just the individual family members who undergo change but the whole family as a unit does as well as economic circumstances. These parents meeting there child for the first time have now changed their current goals and the way they spend their money because now they have a 15 year old they need to take care of.

For Lux the main media influence on her is a radio talk show, that she listens to every morning. She describes it in the episode as the only thing that has stay true while she moved through multiple foster homes. In the textbook they talk about a routine activity theory where adolescents that participate in less structured activities are more likely to develop behavior problems. Lux was never able to participate in structured activity but was able to create her own structured activity every morning with getting ready for school and listening to the radio show. She created her own routine and followed it not matter what.

Lux is a 15 year old girl who has had a rough childhood. Lux was born with a hole in her heart and was in and out of the hospital until she was 3. Since then she has been moved from foster home to foster home and has never really had a real home settle down in. She is very independent and has set her own morning routines of listening to the same radio talk show every morning. She is a motivated individual who doesn't want to rely on adults anymore because the one's that have taken care of her were terrible and only wanted the government check for foster care.
