We can see this because 5 characters were killed in the play. Tybalt, Paris and Mercutio were killed in the continuous fights while Romeo and Juliet died of suicide. This shows that Shakespeare didn't take death to be a very delicate matter as he even made a variation in the deaths such as suicide through poison and stabbing. This can be seen throughout the play in different areas but it is most evident in act 3 scene 5 when in his rage, lord capulet proceeds to implement his authority on Juliet by calling her various offensive names and threatens to drag her to the church. This shows that even though Shakespeare does portray Juliet in a brave light, he still shows men as the superior gender displaying the views people had during the time. Shakespeare had mention multiple deaths within this play to regulate the killing of others to show that it was popular within the Elizabethan era.
However, by killing many people within the play, I believe that Shakespeare was trying to portray a message that death is infectious. This can be interpreted as not only by the death of people but the death of bonds, relationships and family ties. For example, in Act 3 Scene 5, Juliet refuses an arranged marriage set by Lord Capulet, which antagonises the Capulet. As the scene continues, Juliet is insulted several times by the Capulet’s derogatory words and is eventually told “An you be not, gang, beg, starve...” line 190. Here Lord Capulet refers Juliet to a person, who isn’t acting like his daughter, which symbolises the death of a family bond
To conclude, Shakespeare uses death as a tragedy to emote the audience’s empathy and how the era was one of violence and death.

Throughout the play there were a total of 5 main character deaths, Romeo and Juliet via suicide and the rest being Paris, Tybalt and  Mercutio during fights. This shows that Shakespeare didn’t take death seriously, that death would eventually come to everyone and that deaths during duels were very common in the Elizabethan era. At times Shakespeare also depicts death as a form of peace, for example the reason Romeo and Juliet killed themselves is because living without each other would be worse than death itself, so them going to the afterlife together was a way of showing them that they are finally together at peace.

They are considered to be subservient, lesser, and more like possess-able objects. That is evident in Act 3 Scene 5 when Lord Capulet refers to Juliet using words such as ‘mistress minion’ (3.5.151),‘baggage’ and ‘carrion’ (3.5.156-157). Calling her a baggage itself could have many messages behind it. A baggage is a burden that one has to carry, therefore that indicates that Capulet thinks that Juliet weighs him down. This connotation could also mean that Juliet is just an accessory hence she is nothing of great worth. In other words, Capulet made Juliet feel devastated by making her know that she something of no importance to him. Consequently, the audience would be able to infer that women were only expected to obey order and please her parents.
