Consideration of activity appropriate to the age-phase and complete the following detail as directed: Links to mapping & enquiry skills (green highlighted text on Slide 8 – just one word! Links to Geographical concepts (green highlighted text on Slide 9 – just one word!) THE IMPORTANT BIT! The activity you suggest should bring together elements of concepts and skills within an age-appropriate context (70 – 100 words) Links to other foundation subjects and potential contribution to wider curriculum (just subject names)

An activity that could be done in geography for KS1 is developing Location Knowledge. For this the skill used could be using digital technologies and the concept would be Place. For example the children could be given two countries and be asked to find the Capital City e.g England, Wales. If the children finish this quite quickly, they could be given more countries to research. This task could link to Computing as it is teaching them how to use the internet to find information.

How I would plan my lesson is by teaching the children north, east, south and west. Then I'd show them a rhyme to remember like never eat shredded wheat. Ask them to see if they can think of one in pairs. I would continue this in a P.E. lesson and see if they could remember.
P.E. lesson
this links to direction. scales. compass reading

Georgina Bull, Set C

Firstly I would design a powerpoint with human and physical images on such as villages, town, mountains, vegetation and more on. I would ask the children if they could identify each image that shows. I would then go through each one and explain what it is and ways to identify each feature. Secondly I would set up a KAHOOT quiz with each feature on and the answers being different features and get the children to use iPads to interact with this quiz and see how many they get correct.

I have chosen to focus on KS1. I know for geographical skills they need to be able identify the United Kingdom and its countries. I would incorporate this into a lesson through looking at the concept of place. At the start of the lesson, I would discuss the countries in the UK and include some knowledge about them including capital cities.

For the activity, I would put the children into small groups and give each group a big map of the UK. I would give the children labels of the countries and ask if they could discuss and locate these. As a group activity, I would use a quiz to make sure the children are clear about each country.

This could link to art as the children could draw and colour flags for the different countries in the UK.
Beth McDonough, Set B.

I would first start off by showing the children different examples of maps. e.g. a map of the world and a map of a school.
I would ask children different enquiry questions surrounding these maps, such as What can you see? Do you know what country we live in? After this, I would introduce the children to some basic map symbols which we could plan an activity around to consolidate what the children have learnt. For this activity, I would get the children to draw a map of either the classroom or school, including some basic symbols to represent important places.

These activities focus on both maps and enquiry questions. The children are learning about different maps and their symbols. Furthermore, they are also asking and answering enquiry questions.

Francesca R Set B

For example, "there is a lake at the north of the island, and a forest on the left of this". children can use given symbols or create their own, as long as they make sense, and they will build up a map of their island using directional language, compass skills, and mapwork skills. for a further challenge they could use their own directions to guide other children to the 'treasure'. Concepts and skills involved: place, space, scale, using geographical vocabulary, using maps - location, direction, position, orientation, map making and drawing, symbols / representation. subject links: Art and design

I will design few activities to cover most of the geographical concepts and skills. Firstly, I will take pictures of a desert known as Thar desert that is distributed between India and Pakistan.I will ask students to compare the pictures by looking at their traditional dresses, food, environment , Animals, Art and music. We will work in collaboration to point out similarities and differences in Thar desert. At the end of the task children will be able to learn about the Place, Space, Cultural Diversity, interconnection and interdependence and Environmental interactions at that area.

Next activity will be to show them documentary about how people survive in such harsh weather conditions in desert . And I will ask them different enquiry questions including what measures we can take to improve living conditions of people in desert and how can we ensure the availability of clean water at desert.

In the end, by doing such activities students will have thorough understanding of different geographical concepts and skills.
Amna waqar
Set B

Activity - The teacher will introduce the idea of north, south, east and west in the classroom. Then the class would go out onto the playground and the teacher will place 4 dots on the playground. The teacher will then shout out either north, south, east or west and pupils will have to go to the spot they think is the correct cardinal direction. The teacher will then place an item (such as a cone) in the middle of the playground. The teacher would then move to different spots on the playground thus showing how, whether you are north, south, east or west of an object changes depending on where you are.
Geographical skills and concepts - direction, location and geographical vocabulary, place and orientation.

Rebecca Price (Set D)
