Made by Naeem, Ali, Rayaan and Raymond!

The author's message is about patience! Some examples from the story are when Mantis gets trapped (from moving too fast and not checking for traps), and generally being way too impatient and jumping to conclusions (like when he's talking with the sheep who sent him on his Kung Fu mission). This shows the author's message, as Mantis is only able to succeed on his mission when he learns to be patient and stop rushing around!

Made by Khushi, Rayyan, Aydan and Vincy

The author's message is to have confidence and put yourself out there. It's okay to try new things, as you'll never know if you'll like something (or be good at it) if you don't put yourself out there and try it in the first place! Crane had skinny legs and didn't have the confidence to try out for a martial arts class, and he was laughed at by others. When Crane later got the confidence to try out, everyone saw how amazing talented he actually was!

Made by our Grade 3 students!

The author's message is to control your anger and to not judge people by their appearance! Examples from this story are Tigress being judged because she has claws, fangs and looks scary. One of us was angry before because he couldn't write properly on his homework, so he ripped it and ended up having to do it all over again (from scratch)! These examples show that it's important to control your anger (so you don't do something inappropriate) and not judge others by how they look (like animals did to Tigress, even though she was just a scared little girl who wanted a family).

Made by Romaisa, Simrah and Jonny!

There are lots of messages in this short story! There's not judging a book by its cover, be yourself, and courage is the most powerful ability to have. Viper didn't have fangs and the ability to fight, but she ended up being a great warrior (don't judge a book by its cover). Usually people think students with glasses are only good at reading, but they can also be great at other things (like sports). Viper's dad told her she needed to fight with venom (like him), but she was herself and fought with dancing. When Simrah was younger she was told she wasn't good at sports, but when she actually played and practiced (and didn't worry about what others said) she learned that she was actually one of the best hockey players in class! Lastly, Viper was initially afraid to fight, but was able to get up the courage to defend her father. After she learned that she actually could fight, she realized that courage was the most important thing to have!

Made by Altynai, Sahana and Aanya!

The author's message is to treat others the way you want to be treated. The evidence is that monkey had a bad past, and wanted to make people feel the way he did in the past. This just caused more problems, as he wasn't treating people the way he wanted to be treated, but rather like he had been treated before! This reminds us of when we play dodge ball, and sometimes people aren't very good at it and others make fun of them. Those people aren't treating others the way they want to be treated, and are being bullies. They wouldn't want to be treated that way!

Made by Mr. Giraldi!

The author's message in this short story is that martial arts (and Kung Fu in this specific example) is so much more than fighting. Po says that Kung Fu means 'excellence of self', and use the examples of his fellow teachers to show how each of them became better people (like Mantis learning how to be patient) in order to then become truly amazing martial artists. Mantis was a great fighter, but when he learned how to be patient he truly became a Kung Fu master (and was also a better animal for it). An example from personal experience would be from a famous martial artist named Bruce Lee; even though he was an amazing fighter, martial arts to him was 'mastering himself' and becoming a better person (not just a fighter), which meant that he also focused on discipline (controlling his answer) and patience (not jumping to conclusions).
