One of Mussolini's main goals was to stabilize the economy, and making a strong military was one of Fascism's main goals as well, so military production was started. This made many factory jobs available, and allowed many males to get a job where they would not be otherwise able to. Increased taxes made it possible for the government to increase the cash flow into the economy, and increase military spending. Also by using this money, the government bought farmers machinery and fertilizers, and gave them access to land that was expensive to farm, in the hopes that Italy would become self sufficient. Another step to make Italy's economy better and also make it self sufficient was to heavily tax imported grain. These changes helped Italy's economy succeed, and made people support Fascism.

The Great Depression decreased world trade by 70% between 1929 and 1930. There was mass unemployment across industrialized nations. Italy's economy depended on the United States, Britain, and France. This was especially troubling for Italy because the US had the second highest unemployment rate in the world at 25%. This meant that Italy could not rely on those nations like it used to. Imperial preference made it especially hard for Italy to stay on its feet considering Britain and France especially had territories throughout the world, allowing their economies to stay afloat. Italy was cut off from many of its imports. The Italian people, tired of a weak and desperate Italy, wanted a change. Southern Italy at the time was heavily reliant on large estates.

Fascism wanted to make Italy economically self-sufficient, which would remove the threat of an economic downturn if that country they relied on. In 1929, Mussolini pushed for further government intervention to help industries. They believed that a self-sufficient economy would establish Italy as a power, prevent Italy from future economic troubles, and provide the funding for a strong military. Since Fascism was based in nationalism, Fascists wanted a strong military to be prepared for inevitable war at some point.
