The 311 Tohoku earthquake was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan, it triggered tsunami waves reached heights over 40 metres. The tsunami caused nuclear accidents in Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, hundreds of thousands of residents had been evacuated from that area. In Japan, every schoolchild will be familiar with earthquake drills at school, in which alarms sound and children retreat under their desks to shelter from falling debris. The local fire department also takes groups of children into earthquake simulation machines to familiarize them with the sensation of being in an earthquake.

2011.02.22, 6.2 M
The Christchurch earthquake struck the Canterbury region in south island. 185 people died in the earthquake, over half of the deaths occurred in the Canterbury Television Building, which collapsed and caught fire in the earthquake. Another 18 died in the collapse of PGC House. In each of these cases the buildings that collapsed were known to have been appreciably damaged in the September 2010 earthquake but the local authority had permitted the building to be re-occupied. Most buildings did not largely damaged in the earthquake, and the main infrastructures were well-functioned.
