"And a splendid evening party was given in the music room the day he achieved minority" (423)

Don Marcial, Marques de Capellanías, experienced something strange by attending his birthday party as a minor, even though he was described to have been an old man in his deathbed at the beginning of the story. Such quote highlighting his transition is a direct example of his journey going "back to the source" as his life was going in reverse.

The unnamed mulata dancing to the music of the Arata Chapter Three Eyes Band experienced something strange as she was rapidly regaining her youth while she moved to the beat of the drums. This is yet another example which gives a hint to the reader that the story is meant to flow backwards as things (e.g. age and physical appearance) undo themselves.

"The dark circles around Ceres's eyes disappeared, and the capitals of the columns looked as if they had been freshly carved" (421)

The Ceres is a statue of the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain, and motherly love. However, even though a statue is an inanimate object, Ceres could be considered a character in this story because the narrator mentions aspects of her backwards metamorphosis in multiple occasions. In this case, the statue experiences something strange because pieces of it were being rejuvenated without any human interfering or remodeling it.
