John Piper's Quotes

“We weren't meant to be somebody--we were meant to know Somebody” - John Piper

“Life is wasted if we do not grasp the glory of the cross, cherish it for the treasure that it is, and cleave to it as the highest price of every pleasure and the deepest comfort in every pain. What was once foolishness to us—a crucified God—must become our wisdom and our power and our only boast in this world.” - John Piper

The sentiment in these two quotes from John Piper is what I desire for my own life. When I come to the end of my life, when everything I have and everthing I have known is stripped bare for reflection, I want this to be said about my life: "This man lived a life that brought glory to Jesus Christ." The first quote exmplifies that belief. I want to be indentified as a Follower of Jesus at the time of my death, because in the end that is all that matters. It is this passion that I hope I can allow drive every single one of my actions.

Most likely, I will be moving away for college for a couple of years, but when I finish up my college education I hope that I can return to Winston-Salem where my family is located.

With my education I want to become an Actuary. What an actuary does is calculate financial risk. They mostly work for insurance companies to determine the rates and fees for each individual that is paying for their insurance. I find this career interesting because I love to look at numbers, and make decisions based off of factual evidence presented to me.

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil."
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

These couple verses in the Bible are one of my favorites. In the book of Ecclesiastes we have Solomon, one of the wisest men to have ever lived, reflecting upon his life. When he looks back through his life he sees all the mistakes that he has made, and gives solemn advice, especially to the young. It is within these verses that provides the mantra that any person would need to meditate on their whole life, "Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all." Solomon pleads with the young and old alike: anything that you will ever truly have in this life is found within God, and him alone. The rest of the book builds up to this moment where Solomon speaks to the vanities of life, and the remedy to this vanity is seeking after God instead of what trivial things you can search for in this world.
