Globalization allows countries to communicate more efficiently and opens up a wider market for the potential to trade more goods and services. For example, a company that requires steel can purchase cheap steel without having to make it itself. This allows companies to focus on what they need to do without having to self provide. Consumers massively benefit from globalization as goods and services become cheaper, and also goods and services can be received more quickly. However, globalization can in some cases lead to unemployment due to the fact that in industrialised countries, firms move their factories to places where they can source cheap labour. It can also have a negative effect on environmental factors due to countries moving factories to countries with less strict environmental laws. There is potential for financial losses. For example in the 70's and 80's, countries such as Mexico and Thailand got a lot of money from investors as they hoped they would set up new businesses there. When this didn't happen, investors pulled out and the companies had to close due to the loss of capital and resources. Poorer countries such as India and some parts of Africa may not have the capital required to keep up with the rest of the world, thus expanding the inequality gap. Developed countries can expand more easily and uneducated countries find it hard to follow the same oath as other countries, they couldn't keep up even if they knew how! Globalization can be beneficial if it is profitable for all countries, but as it stands, not all countries are benefitting .

Financial intermediaries are important as they make use of economies of scale. Rather than there being a direct lending between a saver and a borrower which can be inefficient because if the lender defaults the saver loses their funds or if the saver wants to withdraw their funds there is no longer necessary funds to back the amount given the lender. Therefore financial intermediaries group together savers and lenders to avoid this problem of liquidity.

A derivative is a contract between two or more parties. The contract is based upon an underlying asset, or assets. The most commonly used underlying assets are bonds, stocks, commodities, market indexes and currencies. The most common derivative markets are Futures market, Options market and CFD markets, also known as Contract For Difference. Derivatives can be traded either OTC (over the counter) or an exchange. Derivatives traded OTC constitute the greatest proportion of those traded, and they are unregulated. Whereas those traded on an exchange are standardized. OTC derivatives are often said to carry more risk for the counterparty than standardized derivatives. Derivatives were originally traded as a means to balance exchange rates for internationally traded goods. This was due to the fact that international traders needed a systematic means of accounting for the differences. When trading derivatives it is important to understand the risks. These include: the counterparty, underlying asset price and expiration.

A comparative advantage is the ability for an individual, or group, to go about a particular economic activity more efficiently than another individual. For example, perhaps one individual can produce a specific product more efficiently than another individual. This is a comparative advantage whereby a product is made more efficiently by one party. The way in which it is more efficient can be due to lower opportunity costs, lower overall cost and the speed in which the product is produced compared to the quality of the product or service. There is a comparative advantage within the EU trading bloc as there is free movement of goods and services.
