Reading about the cases where school districts were not reviewing the considerations of AT, I think their reasoning behind this would be that they saw no need for any assistive technology, so they thought not to waste time. Although this does not excuse their actions, it could be understood because of the number of children who need to be served at each school. While there is much to be done, if these committees are not fully doing their due justice now, they will just be meeting about these same children sometime in the near future.

I believe a lot of times schools or administrators are either misinformed as to how to address a case where a student does need services or they do not want to go through the process of finding the right services/accommodations/assistive technologies/modifications and implementing them on a daily basis. This however, greatly affects the students whose education is at stake. More time will eventually be taken up when these children who are denied of services have to be revisited because they are not doing well academically. By this time though, they will have widened the gap for students with disabilities.

There are quite a few reasons why I believe schools would deny services. First, I think it is because they are not informed about the needs of AT for students. Schools might not be aware that a student needs AT. I also believe that funding might be an issue, although they are required to provide these services to students. Schools must provide students with the tools that they need to succeed academically.

I think the main reason is because of insufficient funding. Another reason may be because they don't have qualified people to do the work or provide the services and if they do, maybe there isn't enough room because they don't have enough people who are qualified.

I think that there are many variables that attribute to a school denying AT services. Funding and resources can play a huge role in that. If a school is unable to provide the necessary AT for every student that needs it, then denials may take place to those who may not be as "qualified".

There are quite a few different reasons why schools are denying student services. One common reason is that the administrators of the school truly believe they are doing what is best for the student. That the student needs to know how to learn or to function or learn without assistive technology or services, because it is not always going to be there in the real world (outside the school).

Schools deny services for a variety of reasons and they all can correlate back to the way legislation and policies are written to support individuals with disabilities. When the state limits how much money is correlated for each schools special education services the individual school and school districts have reason to limit how much can be spent on anything, including AT. Furthermore, a lot of educators in the school system lack the knowledge and training on how to provide effective services for individuals with disabilities.
