1.3 Models of school integration

The issue is a complex one depending on the tolerance of the local society. I think that if the migrants attend separate classes from the rest of the local students feel more isolated and unwanted. The best practice is the integration model, in which they attend regular classes but they have extra support. However, the lack of funding ends up in following the submersion model which is slower in the true intagration of migrants into the local society.

The school plays an important role regarding the integration of refugees and migrants. It gives migrant students the hope for the future. On the other hand, a school can gain from this integration with the development of new teaching and learning methods. The students also learn how to tolerate difference. My school though is not fully prepared to cope with migrants pupils because of the lack of resources / lack of trained teachers. Of course, these things can change.

My students are 12-15 years old. They speak English, French and German. Their level of English is pretty good and they are quite experienced in using ICT tools. My school is also involved in environmental, artistic, sports and technological activities. We use computers and interactive whiteboards. In our school we have alot of children coming from different countries and some of them are economic immigrants. This raises cultural diversity issues.

I believe that the refugees are people with a lot of needs that they need care and protection. The first things have to do with their basic needs (food, water, home). Then, they require phychological support (sense of safety, care and acceptance). Last but not least, their educational needs should be covered by fully-equipped schools and well-trained teachers as much as possible.

I like the ideas proposed by the RespAct group. I think that involving the local community in school projects empowers the feeling of belonging to a cerain area at all parties. Especially, migrants become aware of their new homes and share experiences with the locals. Sports, art, music, eco actions are excellent projects that can be applicable in any context.

We could organise a welcoming party or simply a common activity, lsuch as playing football. The students could also make some research about the country-culture the migrants come from as a kind of project.

Psychologists and social workers could help us to achieve that They could also give us practical tips that we apply in our classrooms.

Ι think that language learning is less threatening and more supportive if the migrants are involved in more relaxed, game-like activities. They can be asked to join leisure activity clubs at school, such as painting, choir, team sports, pottery, theatre, chessetc. In this way, they can both socialise and learn the language in a less formal way of teaching.

The first Monady of October in Greece, there is speacial day dedicated to sports when the students play team sports and do sports activities. I have also used some of there practices in my classes, esp in the first days to build solidarity and trust. Children like these activities and socialise in a relaxed way. I think these can help a migrant student to incorporate better in a new learning environment
