Stage 1 Trust Vs. Mistrust

Erikson's first stage plays a crucial role in the development in babies and how they perceive the world around them. It starts at birth and last around 18 months. This is allowing the babies to learn who they can trust and who is unworthy of their trust by not getting their needs met. If a child successfully develops trust, they will feel safe and secure in the world. "A parent essentially shapes their child's perception and future relationships" (Cherry, 2011). I am the youngest out of my family and we are all 22 months apart. My mom was a busy body. When I would start to cry and get fussing, she would tend to my needs, and we created a trusting bond that I could rely on her to meet my needs when I was incapable of doing so. Also, when we would go to church on Wednesday night and my mom wasn't home with us during the day because she might have been working, I refused to go to the nursey. My mom said that I would just scream and cry. She would take me into the sanctuary with her and I would sit and be quite and my mom would hold me. My mom would say she just needs some momma time. My mom honored that I needed that connection and bonding time.

Autonomy Vs. Shame and Doubt

The second stage focus on developing a sense of personal control over physical skills and a sense of independence. Shame and doubt are when a child is overly criticized and begin to be ashamed of their autonomy and doubt their capabilities. When I was younger, I thought I could do anything like getting dressed, taking my own baths, pour my own drinks. We had to resolve this by my mom being patience and working with me and helping me. She saw the importance of wanting me to feel independent. Success in this stage will lead to the virtue of will. (Mcleod, 2023).

This is the third stage children begin to assert their power and control over the world through directing play and other social interactions. They are becoming more socially and cognitively aware and developing a sense of initiative in their actions. During this when stage I wanted to have my own friend group that wasn't associated with my siblings. I wanted to have something that disconnected me from my siblings. "Essentially, kids who don't develop initiative at this stage may become fearful of trying new things they may feel like they are doing something wrong." (Cherry, 2023)

Industry Vs. Inferiority

This is the fourth stage children work hard to develop a competent and masterful in a variety of ways including social skills, academics, and athletics. If the child is successful, they develop a sense of industry. Inferiority can create an issue when children are not allowed to develop their skills and make choices or decisions. When I was in kindergarten my mom and I would sit down at the table and work on my spelling words, so that I could be prepared for our upcoming spelling test. I had to work hard at studying my words so that I could do well on the test. During the time my mom would help she would be encouraging and motivated me when I would get frustrated. This help me tremendously knowing I had someone supporting me "This is an important stage of development as it lays the foundation for future success and self-esteem." (Psychology, 2023).

This is the fifth stage that happens during adolescence. Adolescence explores different social roles. If they are able to gain a strong sense of self, they build their perseverance that allows them to take chances and go after what they want to achieve in life. Not having a set identity during the adolescent can cause insecurity and doubt who they are. This allows them to find their values and beliefs. When I was entering middle school and extracurricular activities were more popular, I always had it in the back of my mind will be joining this group interfere with going to church on Wednesday and Sunday? Expressing this concern to one of my newer friend who I met in middle school did not understand why it was such a concern to me. This was allowing me to tell her why it is so significant in my life and was able to stand up for what I valued and didn't let her opinion shift my perspective. "Children should understand that in different situations, with different people they must communicate in different ways, but at the same time maintain holistic values that are unchanged regardless of the situation" (Sus, 2023).

Intimacy Vs. Isolation

This is the sixth stage that centers on creating intimate, loving relationships with other people. Some people struggle in this stage which can cause feeling loneliness, and isolated and rejected. I have been thankful enough to have a strong circle full of love and support. I value the people who are in my life. I am grateful that when it came time for me to find a romantic partner that I can say that I have had some good guys that were trusting and didn't leave me to be absolute dry. It is sad but I know everyone cannot say the same thing, that they have had emotional and physical damage. It is super sad to me when people feel isolated and lonely because I know that it affects them deeply. In this article it states "Loneliness can affect overall health in other ways. Socially isolated people tend to have unhealthier diets, exercise less, experience greater daytime fatigue and have poorer sleep" (Cherry, 2023).

Generativity Vs. Stagnation

This is the seventh stage, and this focuses on the challenges of contributing to the well-being of future generations and our society. Sucess in this stage leads to feeling of generativity where individuals find fulfillment in contributing to the welfare of others. When you are not able to meet this challenge, this can result in stagnation. This stage is between 40 to 65 years old. My mom is a great example of sharing what she knows with others. My mom is a high school teacher that teaches family and consumers sciences. She is called a school mom because she gives advice like a mom would. My mom feels like the advice that she gives and the relationships that she builds with her students are impactful in many ways. She is using her life advice to build up and guide other students. "We aim to make a mark on the world, to nurture thing that will outlive us" (Sutton 2020).

Integrity Vs. Despair

This is the last and final stage for Erikson's. Integrity Vs. Despair is getting the opportunity to look back and reflect on your life. You get to do this with feeling accomplishment and fulfilled. You get to see if you were satisfied of the life that you lived is integrity. Despair is when you begin to regret some choices that you have made, you are disappointed, or you missed opportunities. "The basic virtue developed during this time is wisdom" (Beatey, 2023). My grandma lives in Kansas, and we took a trip to Kansas this summer. While we were there, she was telling us stories from when she was younger and also when she was a young mom. She was also telling us stories when she was a working mom to 4 children. She would say money was tight, but they were able to make it work for their situation. At the end of our conversation, she told us that the Lord's favor rested upon her and always showed up. My grandma had an integrity reflection, and she is grateful for all that she has done and all she has experienced.
