If a student makes A's and B's all year, they are expecting to pass the EOG because their grade says they are doing well.....we know this is not the case for so many students across all grade levels and subject areas. Currently I believe grades are inflated and are not a true representation of how a student is doing in class. Grades are supposed to represent mastery of content. However they often include class behavior and effort. One reason for grade inflation is push back from parents / students for anything less than an "A". That's all. I think we do need to report on progress regularly, even if that means "no grade available yet" if a student hasn't turned anything in. When I did SBG I would have empty progress reports if a student didn't turn in assignments based on a particular standard because a 0 wouldn't be accurate, either.
