         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think grades should let parents and students know how they are progressing with grade level material.  If a student makes A's and B's all year, they are expecting to pass the EOG because their grade says they are doing well.....we know this is not the case for so many students across all grade levels and subject areas.  Standards based grading can inform the student, parent, and other school personnel who needs more support on exact standards.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Grades have multiple purposes depending on how they are used.  They measure content mastery, effort, and compliance. They provide a vehicle for two way communication about student progress on whatever criteria has been set. </title>

The purpose of grades is to report student progress for content mastery.  Currently I believe grades are inflated and are not a true representation of how a student is doing in class. Grades are supposed to represent mastery of content.  However they often include class behavior and effort.  One reason for grade inflation is push back from parents / students for anything less than an &quot;A&quot;.  Our current grading and report card process is not truly affective for communicating what is really going on in the classroom.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Grades should be used to demonstrate content mastery. That's all. I think we do need to report on progress regularly, even if that means "no grade available yet" if a student hasn't turned anything in. When I did SBG I would have empty progress reports if a student didn't turn in assignments based on a particular standard because a 0 wouldn't be accurate, either. Granted - this was before Powerschool, so I get that it's different now. </div>]]></description>
