After arriving at the studio, Joel, my supervisor, gave me and two other students a tour of the studio. We shared each other's music to get an idea of our musical taste and production style. We were then shown a cover of a song made by Joel, and he broke down each of the elements used in the mix. For the last part of the session, we did some musical experiments using many instruments around the studio area, including a bass guitar and Moog Keyboard.

At the start of the day, Joel explained to our group how signal flow works (signal flow is how audio is inputed/outputed), using cable types as example. Later in the day, a client came in to the studio. His name was Mo, and he had written songs for a musical; he showed us two of the tracks he had written for the song. We recorded vocals for one of the songs, and Joel showed us how Melodyne works. Melodyne is a software used to tune vocals in a track, we were shown how it works and how it is used in a mix. We each took turns tuning Mo's raw vocals before Joel did his take.

Today's session had a booking for a podcast. There were two hosts, one on a zoom call and the other in the studio recording in the booth. Joel explained the process of mixing vocals using EQ (controls the frequency of soundwaves), compression (cuts off audio peaks in the audio) and distortion (adds frequency information). Our group then discussed on what song we could cover or perform live, one suggestion was "Deeper Underground" by Jamiroquai. At 5:00, the client for the podcast arrived. He explained the concept behind it - the podcast was focused around environment protection. Once we had everyone, we started the podcast recording for the last bit of the session.

Mo was in the studio again for today to improve another of his songs for his musical. Afterwards, we experimented with autotuning my vocals and making a song based of it. The other members in my group recorded backing vocals and we added effects to them. We then mixed the tracks by changing the volume for seperate instruments.

For the last day at the studio, we were tasked with creating an Instagram Reels-style video in order to advertise the studio, this would be useful if we were to persue music. Joel introduced us to Vochlea, a software which allows you to transfer your voice into MIDI (data representation of musical notes). For the video, we recorded ourselfs playing instruments and mixing a song in Logic Pro, as if we were making a song. We arranged the clips we had taken and edited them until we had a final result that we all were happy with.
