Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

The first stage is from birth to 1 years old. This stage babies learn to trust their parents or guardians that they will provide for them all they need. If a baby does not get what they need the baby will develop mistrust. When I would cry I would get fed my bottle, which met a basic need, therefor I learned to trust my parents. "A healthy outcome during infancy, Erikson believed, depends on the quality of caregiving: relieving discomfort promptly and sensitively, holding the infant gently, waiting patiently until the baby has had enough milk, and weaning when the infant shows less interest in breast or bottle."

The second stage is from 18 months to about 2 or 3 years old. In this stage toddlers learn and do things on their own. If they do not then they can doubt themselves and believe they cannot do anything. At this stage I was learning to walk on my own. I was taking the initiative to get up and go and walk on my own and my parents were there to cheer me on, or help me back up if I fell. "A self-confident, secure 2-year-old has parents who do not criticize or attack him when he fails at new skills." "And they meet his assertions of independence with tolerance and understanding."

Stage 3 is from ages 3 to 5 years old. This stage is similar to stage 2. In this stage children learn to start and do tasks on their own and take control of things. If children do not do things on their own they end up doubting themselves. At this age I was wanting to be able to pick out my own clothes whether they matched or not. By picking out my own clothes whether they matched or not I still felt older. I was doing it on my own. Therefor I passed this stage fairly well. If I had my clothes too mismatched my parents helped me with some of it and I did not get upset because I knew they were just trying to help me before we had to go out in public. "They are eager to tackle new tasks, join in activities with peers, and discover what they can do with the help of adults."

This stage is from ages 7 to 13 years old. In this stage children try to complete harder tasks. When the child does not receive encouragement they may feel like they are not being successful. In this stage I was learning to ride a bike without training wheels. I had tons of encouragement from family and friends and this is what made me feel successful in riding a bike. "Industry versus inferiority, which is resolved positively when experiences lead children to develop a sense of competence at useful skills and tasks."

In this stage this is ages 12-18 years old. This stage is where teenagers find their identity by testing the waters with different roles. If not they become confused as adults. At this age and stage I took on the role of becoming a driver which is another step into becoming an adult. Therefor I was not confused on who I was and what my roles are as an adult. At this age I have grown close relationships, but at the same time I have felt isolated when losing a friend, or a break up. I have taken care of this by gaining new relationships and gained intimacy back!

In this stage the older adult look back on their life to see how much they have accomplished, if not satisfied they feel like a failure.
