Starting with this extract, explore how Dickens presents Jacob Marley in A Christmas Carol.
Write about how Dickens presents Marley in this extract.
Also, write about how Dickens presents Marley in the novel as a whole.
This extract is the opening of the novel “Marley was dead: to begin with”.

1) Marley is presented as a “sole friend” and “sole mourner” to Scrooge. It is evident they only had each other as Scrooge is the only one who mourns Marley. This shows how isolated they are from society, and how isolated Scrooge is now as he is dead.

2) The next time we we Marley, is when his face is presented on Scrooge’s doorknob to his house. Scrooge he remembered he is dead. This part shows the first themes of supernatural activity in the novella. This was also a warning to Scrooge, to change his ways before it is too late.

3) The next and final time we see Marley in the novella, is when he is presented as a ghost who is paying for his selfishness and cold-heart. He warns Scrooge that all his actions have consequences and if he keeps being a horrible man, he will be punished.

After hearing about how his sins could turn to punishment , Scrooge has a change in attitude as he is said to be “ imploringly”. This shows how desperate and scared Scrooge . This is the first time we see Scrooge scared in the novella. This portrays Marley as having great Influnence.

Context :
