Over the summer holidays we would like you to become more familiar with the economic and business news. We recommend that you put the BBC App on your mobile. As an ongoing task please keep up to date with key business events and economic news ready to discuss these in September.

We would like you to make brief notes on at least five economic events that happen between now and September, these should be spread out across the summer.

Your summary should include:

-          Title

-          Date that the event happened/news.

-          Up to one hundred words summarising what happened and whether this was positive or negative for the UK. Your summary should be your own words, and not copy and paste.

Examples of things that you could look at include the outcome of the election and the key economic policies that the next Prime Minister announces. You should also make yourself aware of any key economic news such as changes to inflation or interest rates.

This task will form part of our class discussions at the start of the course.

Spend some time looking at the Bank of England’s website. Look at Explainers: the economy made simple | Bank of England. You should familiarise yourself with some of the different topic areas as this will help you with your understanding of the course.

The next decision on interest rates will be on the 1^st August 2024. We would like you to know what the outcome of this decision is and how it relates to other recent interest rate decisions. You would also benefit from reading the Monetary Policy Committee notes which will be published on this link after the announcement as this will provide you with an insight into the reasoning behind the decision.
