Importance of the Chapter

The importance of the chapter is that Jem is becoming older, more mature, and more socially conscious. It also gives the reason why he feels the need to lecture Scout. Also what is important in this chapter is that Dill ran away from his home, which indicates how good of a father Atticus is, and how he keeps a good house hold.Another thing that is important is that Jem tells Atticus that Dill is at their house hiding, and Scout sees this as betrayal, but its Jem's next step to adulthood.

Quote 1 - Atticus talking to Alexandra after she tells him to get rid of Calpurnia.

"Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn't have got along without her all these years. She's a faithful member of this family and you'll simply have to accept things the way they are" (Lee 182)

This quote is important to the story because it shows the relationships in the Finch home. Atticus thinks of Calpurnia as family, and wouldn't let her go because his sister Alexandra told him too.

"....they do get on a lot better without me. I can't help them any. They ain't mean. They buy me everything I want, but it's now-you've-got-it-go-play-with-it" (Lee 191).

This quote supports the importance of the story because it expresses how Dill wants to be treated. He is energetic and wants to have fun and explore. Dill wants to be loved and noticed by others.

Quote 3 - When Jem and Scout get into a fight, Scout explains to the readers how he is like now.

"His maddening superiority was unbearable these days. he didn't want to do anything but read and go off by himself. Still, everything he read he passed along to me, but with this difference: formerly, because he thought I'd like it; now, for my edification and instruction" (Lee 184).

This quote is important to the story because it shows how Scout sees Jem now. It also explains how Jem is changing, and how he is changing from a kid to a man. Instead of playing and doing stuff with Scout and Dill, he goes off by himself, being more independent.

".....what I would do if Atticus did not feel the necessity of my presence, help, and advice. Why, he couldn't get along a day without me. Even Calpurnia couldn't get along unless I was there. They needed me" (191).

This quote is significant because it shows how Scout feels as if she's Atticus' stress reliever. She loves her father, Atticus, so much, and she wants to be important to him.
