Remembering Our Students are Struggling Mightily

—mic harper
Everyday I remind myself that all my students are facing tremendous stressors living under COVID-19. It has become a daily mantra or prayer, if you will. One that reminds me to teach only love, even when I'm at the end of my personal rope (self-kindness goes a long way to putting this meditation into action for my students sake).

Remembering to smile often during Zoom sessions makes a difference to students and helps lighten their load a bit.

So if I may suggest, find a daily practice of compassion for yourself and your students that works for you.

-Jamie Grenland
While taking these EDU courses, I have come across many different changes I can make. The problem is that to make changes usually takes a lot of time, so I just try one thing at a time. My advice for this course in specifically is to just try to incorporate one piece of digital/social media and become proficient at it over a semester. If it seems to work well for your students and you feel comfortable, then move onto adding something else.

Plan for Technology Support

-Tamara Oxford
Many of our students are not adept at technology and not familiar with Canvas layout. This can create anxiety and resistance (and dropouts) and that little to do with the course material . Have a plan for assistance and availability in dealing with the technological challenges that may arise. Consider this will need to be timely to the due dates of the assignment. This can be an extra burden for the instructor, so plan accordingly. You might even create an "office hour" zoom time that anyone can pop in with questions about the course work.

Test assignments and try out resources

-Brian Greene
I try to test drive assignments before giving them to students. Sometimes what seems like a brilliant activity when reading the instructions falls apart in practice. This is especially true if there's a research component. Pick a topic and search for it using some of the library's resources. This can provides an opportunity to tweak the prompt before students start working on it. For example, I find it can be really helpful to give students a list of topics rather than letting them select a topic on their own. This can allow the research portion to be more productive and let students spend more time on the important stuff, like reading, reflecting and synthesizing.

Humanize Online Learning

-Catherine Garoupa White
It was quite a learning curve adapting to online teaching when I began at Columbia a couple of years ago, with changes advancing even more rapidly now because of the COVID pandemic and other pressing issues like the wildfires, power outages, economic and social upheaval, etc. I have noticed how much our attitudes and behaviors can change in the online environment. Setting clear expectations for interactions in an online environment can help humanize a process that often feels disconnected, with less accountability for actions. I use things like a "Class Agreements" contract in Module 1, a list of Netiquette tips, and by carefully monitoring discussions for any harmful behavior. It's important to remember that we are all humans behind the screens.

Make short "How To" Support Videos for your Students

- Anca Husher
I noticed that many times students have the same questions over and over again. We all do when we learn something new, especially if there is some new technology that we have to use.
So I start to have in the Canvas Studio Collections these mini videos ( about 3 min) as "How To" do something, answering general questions from students. Examples are how to do a step in excel, or how to create a hot link in a word document or power point or google sheets etc. In the end I keep it only to 1 simple element per mini video. Students have good feedback as they are short and focused. In addition you can use it many times in the future.

Zaya.P
Since we went on remote and also online teaching, students are taking advantage of this situation. Students are not attending in lecture zoom and some bring excuses. They are comfort about having recorded lectures , but with my experience, students who are attending uniformly, they learn and they do much better compare to those who are not attending. Watching recorded lectures is hard for students. I think we have to find ways to make attending in lectures zoom mandatory.
Zaya

Consistency in the Online Classroom

Candice Hann
One thing that students appreciate is consistency. They like to know where to find things, what kind of assignments to expect, and an overall sense of the class structure. Consistent doesn’t necessarily mean boring, either! An instructor who is consistent about feedback and course expectations can make students feel more comfortable to take part in learning. An instructor can also create consistency in the layout of a course. I think the headings, images, font, text, and page structure capture students’ attention because they are looking for those cues.

I have learned so much from all of you and I really appreciate it. I just wanted to add that I have been making a lot of use of flippity.net because my students have embraced the flashcards and Quiz Show for practice - and I was inspired to create a family trivia game for my family's Thanksgiving Zoom meeting. I was pleased to find out that there is also a template for the Quiz Show (unlike what is automatically generated by the flashcards) and I'm having a lot of fun creating family trivia! Happy Thanksgiving to all!
