Tennis genuinely came to be when the monks from France began to play it in the 12th century. The word tennis comes from the French word "tenez" which means "take this". The modern scoring system was derived from the French, like the words love and duece. Overtime, Tennis began to migrate. By the 15th century had caught up to the rising sport. Henry VIII was an excited supporter, he changed the named to 'Real Tennis'. He even constructed a court at Hampton. At this time, balls of cork were used and long wooden rackets. Even though the modern rules are not quite the same as the old day rules, you can tell that these are the roots.

Over the years, tennis rapidly spread throughout Europe and it was held in very high regards. In the 19th century Major Walter Wingfield sprouted the sport by introducing Lawn Tennis to the British upper class. The first ever Lawn Tennis Championship took place in England sponsored by the All England Croquet Club at a little place called Wimbledon. From here, Tennis began to flourish immensely and make its way overseas. The US Open was created in 1881, The French Open in 1891, and by 1905, the first Australian Open took place. These 4 tournaments are known as the Grand Slam tournaments till today.

Tennis has evolved immensely since the time of the Renaissance but the presidents it set are still put into play. The game is still played with a ball and a racket just like the old days. The word 'love' which means that a player has 0 points originated from the French word 'l'oerf'; an egg shaped zero. The term duece, which means the games tied, is thought to have come from the French word 'a deux le jeu' which means "to both is the game". These words traveled though centuries of different people and players and are still instilled in the game today. During the 15th century, balls of cork were used to play. Modern day tennis balls are made of a hollow rubber core, covered in wool/nylon. Tennis rackets today are far more complex, they can go from metal, to wood, and to even carbon fiber. Tennis courts have also changed, and so have their surfaces. All of these changes were meant to make the sport more difficult, challenging and exciting to watch.
