"Hard-nosed Marine fighter pilot Lt. Col. Wilbur "Bull" Meecham calls himself "The Great Santini". He runs his family with a strict hand. In 1962 before the Vietnam War, the Meecham family struggles to fit into the Marine town of Beaufort, South Carolina where they are newcomers. Conroy makes the point that Santini is a warrior without a war, and in turn is at war alternately with the service that he loves and his family." (From Wikipedia)

I saw this title on a best nonfiction books of all time list. I had studied abroad in Australia in the spring (their fall) of 2006. It's a thick read, but history is my background and the writing is great. I can just hear Hughes say "No" in the weird way Australians do: "Nar."

The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede

This book is a true story about events on 9/11 that have inspired Broadway’s smash hit musical Come from Away. I wanted to read this book before seeing the musical next year in Madison. It is an inspiring story about 38 jetliners bound for the U.S. that were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada due to the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11. The population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill, providing transportation to shelters, linens and toiletries, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news. Over the course of those four days, many of the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents, which has continued to this day. As a show of thanks, scholarship funds for the children of Gander have been formed and donations have been made to provide new computers for the schools. -Mrs. Donlin
