Perceptions

"Perceptions of gang presence did not vary for students across uniform policy, teachers from schools with uniform policies did perceive statistically significantly lower levels of gang presence." (Stafford and Wade pg. 406)
This is based on student perception and also teacher perception. Since clothes are ways to express meaning, taking out the option to represent gangs with colors or actions such as sagging pants can increase better focus and make the environment feel safer however, there is no significant effect of uniform. It is through perception so this is not necessarily true.

Statistics with Elementary and Secondary

"“Do not conceive that fine clothes make fine men any more than fine feathers make fine birds.” (Yeung pg. 871) quote was taken from the passage to note that clothes can only do so much for you. Within the passage, it spoke about studies that showed somewhat of a difference between elementary level and secondary levels with schools that have uniform and without. There is little evidence that uniforms improve achievements in school and if there are effects, it is not significant enough to say this is a fact.

Possible Negative effects

They take away student freedom of expression and how it dehumanizes effects of uniforms. Aaron Morton, a seventh grader said he "feel like robots" and Alexis Richardson who is also a seventh grader said "People can’t be who they are if they have to wear the same thing every day". Uniforms were also used as a way to mark orphans and charity children in past events. This plays a negative role on the self esteem of students and potentially create a financial disadvantage on parents to purchase the clothes.
