Many community members have limited knowledge of water source management and environmental conservation. This lack of awareness directly contributes to degradation and undercuts local efforts to protect natural resources.

Lesson: Awareness and education must be the foundation of any community-based intervention.

2. Environmental Degradation Is Both Human- and Climate-Induced

Activities such as animal grazing, charcoal production, and agriculture near water sources were repeatedly observed as damaging practices. Meanwhile, climate change (e.g., unpredictable rainfall, drying springs) compounds these problems.

Lesson: Interventions must address both human behaviors and climate resilience to be effective.

3. Observational Data Provides Powerful Insight

Physical observations helped validate community claims and revealed issues that may not arise in interviews (e.g., lack of fencing, erosion, gendered roles).

Lesson: Always combine qualitative interviews with direct field observations to ensure an accurate picture.

4. Policy Without Enforcement Is Ineffective

Though some bylaws exist, enforcement is weak, and villagers often act without consequences.

Lesson: Legal frameworks must be backed by community ownership, regular monitoring, and local enforcement capacity.

5. Women and Girls Bear the Greatest Burden

Observations confirm that women and girls predominantly fetch water, making them most affected by poor water access.

Lesson: Water management strategies must be gender-sensitive and actively involve women in decision-making and leadership.

6. Historical Knowledge Is Valuable for Planning

Elders shared vital information about how water patterns and forest cover have changed over decades.

Lesson: Indigenous and historical knowledge should be integrated into planning for environmental sustainability.

The first meeting of the Local Innovator Program (AYNI) was held on Friday, July 19, 2025, with small-scale farmers, cooperative leaders, community leaders, and stakeholders. The meeting aimed to introduce the program, discuss the identified problem, and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The meeting was productive, with team members and stakeholders expressing enthusiasm about addressing the identified problem of small-scale farmers' limited access to funding due to lack of financial literacy. They are confident that this collaboration will bring positive change to Gbako Local Government and make it a better place. The team is excited to work together to achieve the program's objectives and improve the lives of small-scale farmers in the community.

The #JosLIP2025 journeyed to the communities across Jos, Plateau State, for a Territorial Validation, sitting with key actors of Education who live the reality of girls' education every day.

We heard from parents with hopes, girls with dreams, teachers with concerns, and leaders with questions. We listened with empathy to government officials, school heads, faith leaders, boys, and media influencers.

This was a heart-to-heart with the community to understand the barriers, build trust, and shape real solutions together of girls education together with community we serve.
