We can tell this because the man absentmindedly 'trampled calmly' over a young child. The quote shows that this man does not care about the consequences of his action nor how he will come across to spectators. It could also show the reader that he is emotionless, as no ordinary human would do what he did. Stevenson's use of the oxymoron amplifies to the reader how shocking this crime was, as it is like the man intended on knocking the child over and was not bothered by her 'screaming'. The situation would petrify a Victorian reader because at that point crime was at it's highest point as many murders were being carried out, like Jack the Riper's victims.
